odd question but my ds ( doing maths physics and 3D design A levels) is a bit put off architecture because he thinks it will involve lots of essays and hes more science based. is this right? hes thinking engineering would be better for him, but doesnt really know much about it. are there any good resources to help him decide?

Engineering will be a better paid and more stable career than architecture. Architecture is very sensitive to the economy and there are more aspiring architects than jobs whereas there is a shortage of engineers.

The Engineering Council is a good place to start when looking for engineering info. It gives you info about the courses and qualifications.

You will see a list of chartered engineering institutions. Look at the major ones which correspond to university courses. So look at civil, structural, mechanical, electronic, electrical, environmental etc. See what interests him at each one. Structural is closest to architecture but is usually taught with civil engineering.

Universities worth looking at for info would include Sheffield, Bristol, Southampton, Loughborough and Manchester. There are others of course but these unis are a good place to start.

As for jobs: some engineering grads go into finance work. Others are well placed to get a job. Be proactive and employment is available for the majority. Architecture is less stable - I agree with pp above.

When looking at engineering degrees, try and go for MEng. If a young person intends to be a chartered engineer, this degree is the quickest route. BEng is slower and requires further study to elevate the degree. Chartered Engineers usually commend a premium in consultancies.
