Has anyones child changed courses whilst at uni. My son is in his first year and not enjoying his course. He has found another course he would like to start next year and has contacted them but has been told he needs to apply through UCAS extra. Has anyone gone through this and have any tips.

Former Admissions Tutor here. Does your DS want to change to a new course at his current uni? If so it will help if he does as well as he can in the current exam cycle. If he can demonstrate that he can be successful at this particular uni he will be offering his new School an advantage over the rest of the incoming Y1 cohort. The uni has an interest in retaining his fees

This assumes he meets the admissions criteria for the new course. Of course he should take good care over the new application

This is a fairly common scenario. Good luck to your DS

DD switched last year. She didn't have to go thru UCAS but did have to make up missed modules so workload this year has been higher. Luckily 4 year Scottish degree with some flexibility built in. Switch was competitive and sh needed good grades overall not just in subject area she was switching to.

Depends what the other course is and how it usually selects students. If applicants usually have to compete for places - e.g. through interview/audition/portfolio, or if offers are made to qualified applicants on the basis of the personal statement - the course director/admissions tutor is unlikely to want to allow people to by-pass the process by transferring from another course for which they didn't have to go through these steps.
