Art/Illustration degrees - which university?

SpacehopperFace · 28/03/2022 22:11

Whilst I appreciate I can research various universities I also thought it would be good to get views here of the different courses/universities.

D.C. is considering the following:
Leeds Arts
Brighton
Nottingham Trent
Edinburgh
Manchester Met
Falmouth

most likely for Illustration but not 100% decided. Any thoughts or experiences of these at all in terms of teaching, student experience and so on?

TIA

UAL is an obvious one. Also Arts Bournemouth. The Complete University Guide is useful.

Can’t help you with detail but Falmouth is very different from the other major cities you list. Therefore DC should consider city vs Cornwall!

I attended a few open days with dd. I thought the Illustration course at Arts University Bournemouth was of a very high standard. Kingston is also good but felt it was quite snooty and woke.

When your dd's speaking to people, worth remembering any pre-March 2020 experiences of previous students may be slightly 'out of date' - if going to open days it's probably useful to quiz carefully what the post corona arrangements are in terms of online vs studio/in-person tutorials.

OP, is your dd planning to do a foundation year - it is another year's costs (especially if living away from home!) but if she hasn't made her mind up finally which degree to do it gives a bit more opportunity to decide.

Friend did an art degree at Trent starting just pre-covid and the covid experience was pretty grim from what she said - but it was bloody grim everywhere for students to be fair.

DDSs friend did an art degree - not illustration - at Brighton and enjoyed her experience. Accommodation was pricy and when she was in halls they were a bus ride away.
Is your DC doing an art foundation course? It’s strongly recommended. Provided the student has only done two years of sixth form and is under - I think 20 - there are no tuition fees. My DD did hers at a local university so she stayed at home. Some colleges do it too.

@SpacehopperFace Anglia Ruskin University.

@SpacehopperFace ignore my earlier post. A friend's DC is at Falmouth and loving it.

We're just back from a visit to Nottingham Trent. Really impressed with both the Uni and the City. Have looked at Winchester school of art, AUB, Lboro and NTU. DD much prefers NTU. She applied to Edinburgh too but decided to withdraw as needed to make a decision about NTU.

I know the head of art at Falmouth uni and he's lovely, really supportive and progressive. The community around the campus(es) is great and it's a great place to spend a few years, very different to a city uni.

My daughter is looking at Falmouth - she likes the idea of a small town by the beach (not interested in clubs or pubs). My concern is industry contacts being so far from London?
UAL - has terrible student satisfaction ratings. I hear the studio space is cramped, and a friends daughter just did her foundation year at CSM and said it was like doing her GCSEs again and has declined her offer of a degree place. Not much of a community feel as kids live all over. My daughter is doing a short course over the summer which will give her a taste.
Nottingham Trent has a great student satisfaction rating and we are looking forward to visiting it.
Any thoughts on UCA? AUB?

Localher0 · 19/05/2022 17:58

My DD really liked AUB campus but felt it was a bit too far out of town. And Bournemouth felt a bit old fashioned.... in order of preference she says NTU, Winchester, AUB & Loughborough. That Lboro ranked so low really surprised me as it's high in the tables but she was not impressed.
For UCA we've only looked at Farnham for foundation year but it seemed good.

easyday · 20/05/2022 14:37

Yea it would be UCA Farnham for the degree. Teeside? It's animation for dd but some seem to incorporate illustration.
She'd love a campus uni, not interested in big cities (or a party place). Foundation year first though.
