Has anyone got a DC doing Economics at Manchester? What do they think of the course and the University experience in general?

TIA

DD boyfriend is in his first year at Manchester doing Economics and loving it. Very bright, hardworking lad and finding it relatively easy so far but I think they are going over a lot of the stuff he studied at A-level. He is in halls and hasnt really mixed too much as he already has a set of friends that also went from school, he is a pretty quiet lad too. I know he finds all his flat mates friendly though.

DS enjoying the course and Manchester. Says it’s quite different to A level (BSc). Maths is a step up from A level (but did have a gap year) Seems to have reasonable contact hours and teaching time. Loves his halls. My DD also went to Manchester, different degree, different halls and loved it.

A family member of mine is a recent economics grad from Manchester and they really didn’t like it. I suspect Manchester was too big for them, it’s a big uni in a big city.
They didn’t rate their teaching at all.
They had CONSTANT issues with dodgy folk in fallowfield, and article 4 licensing means there’s limited HMOs elsewhere in Manchester so there wasn’t many places they could live.

Thanks so much for all the replies. Appreciated Smile

one of my kids went there - a different degree. They had a lot of teaching and exams, so i felt we got our monies worth. I also think this meant it was well respected as a degree by employers. We live in quite a rural southern area, so the city was a real shock to their system, but i considered this to be part of their uni learning experience. housing was pretty easy to find - compared to many places my other kids have been.

My DD is in her first year and really enjoying the course. There is a LOT of challenging maths, which she loves and she has had two lots of exams so far. She has had mostly face to face teaching, bar the odd lecture, whereas, 2 friends at other unis are having online lectures (different courses)Confused. She likes Manchester and picked it because it's a small city and likes to explore. Her accommodation is a few minutes walk from lectures which has worked well for this year. Next year she will be moving out to fallowfields which can be a bit dodgy or so we have heard. If you have any more specific questions let me know and I can ask her. I have nothing to compare it to though as neither myself or DH went to uni.

I should add that the exams have been online and DD came home to do these (get her washing done/meals cooked Grin). I don't know if this is usual or if it's COVID related?!

@CaveyWavey thanks so much. That’s really helpful. My DD will message you. She has an offer from Manchester and is trying to work out where to choose. Appreciated Smile
