Students loans for non UK Brit student

DD1 is hoping to go to a UK uni. She has British and French nationality but is resident in France. Will she be eligible for a UK loan? She has savings that will hopefully cover fees but not living expenses. She's the oldest of 4 in close succession and I'm a bit worried about how we might cover costs.

If she goes before 2028 then she'll be treated, in all likelihood, as a Home student and will thus be eligible for student loans. My DD is the same, Italian/British and I looked into all of this last year before she did her UCAS application. The universities she has applied to have confirmed she'll be a home student.

From SFE:

When you’re eligible for full support
You can apply for full support if all the following apply:

you’re a UK national or Irish citizen or have ‘settled status’ (no restrictions on how long you can stay)
you normally live in England
you’ve been living legally in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for 3 continuous years before the first day of your course, apart from temporary absences such as going on holiday
You may be eligible for full support if you’re a UK national (or family member of a UK national) who both:

was living in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein on 31 December 2021, or returned to the UK by 31 December 2020 after living in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
has been living in the UK, the EU, Gibraltar, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein for the past 3 years

So she is not automatically eligible and you’ll need to contact SFE to explain her exact situation and they can advice.

Just to clarify a PP’s point, how universities view you and how student finance view you are two totally separate things. Universities will assess if you are home or international and offer the appropriate fee level. Separate to that SFE assesses your eligibility for support. So you can be classed as a home student but not eligible for SFE and vice versa. Definitely speak to SFE direct to clarify.

What @Geamhradh said (which @SometimesRavenSometimesParrot post also says). It was part of the original EU withdrawal agreement that UK citizens domiciled in the EU would continue to have the same rights for ten years.

Thank you all for your advice. Paying home fees would make an enormous difference. She has a very reasonable offer from goldsmiths but their international fees would make it impossible. So that's good news.

The original plan was Kings for a LLB but I'm not sure her predicted grades will get her an offer. She also doesn't know what her LNAT score was yet. I think her plans are also changing a bit as the reality of uni approaches.

I think I'm going to start another thread about her choices and she can follow that. I'm just not at all knowledgeable. I don't even remember doing any of this but I did go to uni so suppose I must have done.

Get her the Times University guide. DD started with that, it's a mine of information. Then from there she moved onto individual university websites etc.
I went to UK uni from 84-88 and in those dinosaur days it was very simple. UCCA form, input maybe from your sixth form teachers, your mum sorted the grant out. Any interview you went on your own or with your mum who went shopping while you were there.
These days it's almost like a full time job for a year Grin

If she already has a Goldsmiths offer have they said whether it is as a home student or international? Remember too each uni makes their own assessment about this
