Any experience of Northumbria University?

My son has had a tough few years and missed some of his education. He is very unlikely to get a place in a Scottish university as there are so few places for Scottish students so on advice of school he applied to Northumbria to study Psychology and has a very achievable conditional offer. It looks great and Newcastle is fab but I don't know anyone with any experience of the university. Any advice?

I did my post grad there. It was absolutely fine but I can’t comment on under grad or the associated social life. I spent a lot of time in the library which was good, the gym was great and actually the pastoral stuff was good. I had to see a counsellor at one stage and that was managed well.

I think psychology is done at the city centre campus, so right in the middle of everything. Newcastle is a great city and I think your son will have a blast. I lived in Heaton which I loved - great little independent cafes a lovely family run Italian that had been there forever.

My DD is studying Psychology at Newcastle (rather than Northumbria) so sorry I can't comment on the Uni but the city. She is loving the city, students can walk everywhere and in second and third year students from both Unis tend to live in the area to the east of the city centre (Jesmond and Heaton)

It has a top reputation for product design. Jony Ive the iPhone designer studied there.

A family member has had a positive experience (law), mine in 2014 was very poor (post-grad different course).

I think, like most universities, it probably depends on the department.

I went there, however MANY years ago!
I’m somewhat biased as am from the area anyway, but it’s a fab place to attend university. Lots to do, friendly, and way cheaper than most cities!

I did my under grad there 20 years ago. Mainly based at the Coach Lane Campus.
I didn't have a great experience.
As a Health/SW/Education student I felt like we were seen as second class students.
Also the general feeling in the City was that the Newcastle University students were the 'proper' students and the Northumbria students were the not so bright ones who weren't accepted by Newcastle Uni.
To be fair that wasn't far from the truth. Sorry.

I get the feeling that you get that in most cities where you have an older university and a post 92 university @Pleaseuniverseplease. University of Manchester vs Manchester Met, Leeds University vs Leeds Beckett, Oxford vs Oxford Brookes etc.
