Anyone got a dc applying to Nursing?

I see the medicine threads all the time but wondered if anyone has a dc (or possibly yourself!) applying for Nursing this year.

Ds always thought he wanted to go to Art School (like dd1) but he hated his portfolio course and quit to get a job - ended up as a home carer. And he LOVES it, enough that he's applied to Adult Nursing courses this autumn. We're in Glasgow so he's applies to GCC, UWS, Stirling, Edinburgh and Dundee, but really wants to stay in Glasgow --because his girlfriend is here? Possibly!

I think he's got a good chance, his grades are above what's necessary and he has some work experience (which his GP dad organised for him) and obviously his job, which has got him lifting and handling, doing personal care, issuing medication and dealing with catheter bags and stoma care. He's really nervous though an£ worried he's going to be the only guy on his course!

So I just wondered if anyone else has experience of this?

Fabulous news. He sounds a really good candidate. Bumping for someone more experienced

An old retired nurse here. He sounds like a perfect candidate and I'm pretty sure not the only male on the course as more men going in to nursing, and even midwifery.

How amazing! Sounds like he will smash it.

Not nursing, but I’ve recently started my midwifery degree at pushing 40. I got onto it with no experience, just good grades and a passion.

Everything crossed for him. It’s not something I could do

DD is in her first year doing something else but has decided she wants to do nursing. She reapplied through UCAS and got her first offer today after an interview yesterday! Good luck to him, DD is hoping there'll be some lads on the course. We get male students at work and the patients love it 😊

I am a nurse.. also in Glasgow. Your son should have no issues getting on the course and won’t be the only guy, will be outnumbered though. GCU have the biggest intake. Sorry to be a misery… but currently I would rather my child done anything rather than nursing, the pressures on individual staff are just too much xx

I don't have a child in uni but I am a nurse, started my training in 2006 and there were around 10 men in my class then. Now I see a lot more male students passing through and in the areas I've worked (HDU, ICU and theatre) there are a lot of male nurses.

Sounds like he'll be brilliant, good luck to him! Also I trained at UWS when it was still Paisley and came out with a diploma when the degree was still optional, then topped up to a degree much later in Cali.

My children have a friend who's in his first year of nursing at uni. He's outnumbered by women but by no means alone as a man. He's enjoying it (early days yet but he has done a placement which has been the best thing so far). My only concern would be that all his teaching was on line last term which does not seem to be typical of unis nowadays and is a very different experience from my first year uni child (same town, different uni). But hopefully that will be changing soon.

I get your point as I’ve seen the pressures on midwives but on the other hand, things won’t improve without new nurses and midwives coming through

Started my nurse training in '86 with 3 out of 12 men. Smile

Lots of men now in nursing and wards are typically full of other professions too with more men eg physios. Lots of jobs are hard and demanding these days but when you weigh up job security, career opportunities and the satisfaction of helping people when they are at their most vulnerable, nursing compares very favourably.

Just come back to this, ds woke up this morning afternoon to a unconditional from Glasgow Caledonian, his first choice! He had 4 interviews out of 5 and 3 offers, so he's feeling pretty good about it all. I'm proud of my wee boy!

Congratulations to him. He'll has a great career ahead of him with lots of opportunities to go into different specialties in nursing. I started my training in 1966 and, although things have changed a lot, it's still a great profession. Hopefully future politicians will provide the NHS with more support and start to appreciate the nursing profession.

I started this thread earlier in the year when my ds put in his application to study nursing. He started this week at his first choice uni. It seems pretty full on from the get go but he is loving it and looking forward to his first placement. He's also moved into halls (locally, can't really believe he got in as it's about a 20 min drive to uni and he has a car!) and it's great to see him start to blossom. He's been out of school for 2 years and lovely that he's found his niche!

Anyone else have a dc doing this?
