Waiting is horrible, hope you get results soon majaso

Majaso12 · 09/02/2023 10:24

Feeling very on edge all the time. Her doctor is away after tomorrow so hope the results are back tomorrow. Receptionist said she’d have to make an appointment to get the results and they haven’t got any until the 21st.

Today she has a sore throat and has felt like she had a cold yesterday, so hoping that’s all it is and she’s just been run down lately because of stress maybe. She is a worrier like me and her second exam she had in January was awful she said, has probably been worrying about that.

Majaso12 · 09/02/2023 11:36

DD’s results have come back all normal. The only outstanding ones are the ones looking for past infections. Whether it means she doesn’t currently have glandular fever. Doctor said he was testing to see if she’d had it in the past. Such a relief!

Notagardener · 09/02/2023 14:19

That's good news. DD2 had a period of not being well in 6th form, and we had all the tests too. Hers came back positive for past infection by cytomegolavirus, which is apparently similar to Glandular Fever, but I had never heard of it before that.

DD1 had/still gets a swollen gland under her neck. She was tested, like your DD, for all things, including cancer. A horrible week waiting in year 8. She was fine though, and has had no further problems.

chopc · 09/02/2023 15:26

That's pleasing news @Majaso12

I remember I was permanently exhausted as a medical student and as I rushed through life this went on until we left UK to go for our stint in Dubai

When you are run down you are more likely to get I'll so I would recommend multivitamins , probiotics and echinacea

Whether they will take it is another issue

My year 12 son doing IB is permanently exhausted and he has so much work to do. I got him some wellteen vitamins. Apparently they made him less tired but his brain didn't work 🤷🏽‍♀️

Majaso12 · 09/02/2023 15:33

@KnittedCardi Did your DD1 just have blood tests? I’m hoping she hasn’t had glandular fever in the past.

@chopc. I’ve been telling her she should take vitamins. She says she thinks she has some, so obviously hasn’t checked or taken any lately. Think I’ll order some and have them sent to her. I do think she is run down.

Majaso12 · 09/02/2023 19:01

She’s just had an email saying this:

The past infection tests actually came back just now and show a previous viral infection (called
EBV) sometime in the past but not currently.
This is most likely to be the cause of the lymph node symptoms.
I would just suggest monitoring for rapid enlargement and if that doesn't happen (which
I;m sure it won't then all is fine.

I was reading up about this virus and got myself worried after reading it increases the risk of multiple sclerosis, lymphoma and non Hodgkin’s lymphoma so I’ll be worrying about that a bit now.

Overeggingthepudding · 09/02/2023 20:40

Oh that’s a relief @Majaso12 .

chopc · 09/02/2023 22:14

@Majaso12 did you not also read that most adults have probably has asymptomatic EBV?

OP posts:
AvocadoPlant · 09/02/2023 22:30

All sounds very positive, given the concerns earlier in the week. Hope your DD is soon feeling better Majaso

bendmeoverbackwards · 09/02/2023 23:53

Oh no, just had bad news from dd. I haven’t managed to speak to her directly yet but apparently she’s been given a 0 for one of her exam essays for submitting it wrong. I was at work so couldn’t speak but dd1 spoke to her and it’s something to do with putting down the wrong module code. She’s in a real state. Does anyone know anything about this?

chopc · 10/02/2023 06:50

@bendmeoverbackwards I don't know anything about this but surely this must be something that can be rectified?

OP posts:
Majaso12 · 10/02/2023 07:59

@chopc Yes I read that after! Still not sure if it means she’s had glandular fever, she thinks she hasn’t.

When she first text me she said it was HBV found and then about 10 mins later said she meant EBV!

@bendmeoverbackwards That seems harsh, an easy mistake to make. I hope she gets it sorted.

BenchOfCompany · 10/02/2023 11:51

@bendmeoverbackwards surely that is something that they can rectify, she has done the work and submitted it on time just with the wrong code.

@Majaso12 awful when they are ill and you are not there with them. Hopefully she will recover and not have any further issues. If she does you just take it one day at a time. EBV is very common and easily caught. If they hadn't been looking she wouldn't know she had had it. Good that she feels she can go to the GP if she is worried about anything.

bendmeoverbackwards · 10/02/2023 11:54

Just spoke to dd, it’s worse than it sounds. The course code was very similar to the previous week’s essay so she submitted the wrong one (ie submitted the same one twice). I am so upset for her. She’s emailed the course tutor to find out her options. It can possibly be marked with a penalty but I don’t know. She’s in floods of tears.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 10/02/2023 15:48

Your poor DD @bendmeoverbackwards I hope something can be sorted, even if the mark is capped.

AvocadoPlant · 10/02/2023 17:26

oh no, your poor DD, I can only imagine how upset she must be. I hope the uni can help and the essay can be marked and added somehow @bendmeoverbackwards

chopc · 10/02/2023 19:00

Oh gosh @bendmeoverbackwards surely it's an easy mistake to make. I think there should be some Safeguards against things like this. Like when you need to do a bank transfer. It's such an easy mistake to make

I hate these online exams in any case and even more so. How can they be sure to protect against plagiarism? Dd is very honest and wouldn’t want to cheat but I bet there are students who get a lot of help or even have their essays written for them. It’s not a level playing field.

AvocadoPlant · 10/02/2023 21:12

Though to play devils advocate, in a subject like history it’s a better test of their research and writing skills than an exam in hall where the student parrots work already learned as they cannot research and write anything original, unless the questions are known in advance.

But there should be safeguards to ensure work is correctly submitted, and follow up if not received.

Notagardener · 10/02/2023 21:24

So DC1 preferred online 24 hour exams. He is a slow thinker and especially a slow writer. Struggled to finish things if only few hours time to finish.

Dc2 on the other hand I have seen writing an essay for school homework straight in her workbook without having made any notes beforehand.

So yes, what suits one doesn't suit another person.

Presumably with an online exam it is easier than with handwritten scripts to check for plagiarism, as the text can automatically be run through a plagiarism checker when it is submitted, as with other essays submitted during the term?

Pumpkintopf · 11/02/2023 19:25

@bendmeoverbackwards we had similar (though not an exam essay) with DS - he thought he'd submitted a piece of work but it hadn't been received by the department (and he had no acknowledgment of receipt, and hadn't checked - the first he knew was when he got a zero mark).

He appealed. They (eventually) gave him the capped mark as they could see he'd tried to submit it and it hadn't been touched since.

I hope your dd will be able to get at least a similar outcome- I agree the way they punish these kids for basic (generally 'administrative') errors is IMO unreasonably harsh.

AvocadoPlant · 15/02/2023 22:03

@bendmeoverbackwards hiw has your DD got on? Hoping for a positive outcome x
