A management and leadership qualification

Leobynature · 12/01/2022 16:37

I am currently working as an assistant manager in social care. The council will not pay for me to do management training although I really do need and want this. Therefore, I will need to fund this qualification myself. Ideally I would like to do a Masters in management and leadership however I cannot afford the high fees attached to this. Can anyone recommend a management and leadership course which I can do online which will also be a recognisable accredited qualification from a reputable education establishment.

Could be worth a look at these from the Open University as they start soon?

Ask your HR dept (or whoever is responsible for staff development) whether they can use their apprentice levy to fund you doing the Senior Leader apprenticeship. It's Masters level and most local authorities don't use all their levy and lose it.

Thank you for the link to the free management course at the open university. That’s a good start

I was quite closely connected to the ilm ones as they were offered as development to nominated people where I worked. They were good but I would add a couple of caveats (although probably influenced mostly by where and how they were delivered): a lot of line managers who nominated people for them would give feedback that they found the content too theory-based, and the people studying expected that they would take about 18 months to do them based on 3 hours plus assignment commitments a month, and in practice, many needed a lot longer, and it was hard on motivation even for people who were very good. On the ILM site there are some podcasts and web workshop recordings though, some are free and potentially some would want a membership to be able to access them - one route to this area is here www.institutelm.com/what-we-do/try-our-learning-resources.html

I would recommend looking into, and probably getting advice from, the CIPD if you can, as they would know their stuff. I think they do offer a suite of courses, or could advise. Sometimes even Eventbrite will turn up some free or cheap web options with some search terms - have had some very good experiences with courses that look interesting but a bit random.

We tend to use certhub.co, the mainly provide Construction training but if you contact them, they can provide pretty much any qualification in any industry
