Thoughts on University of Derby

Any students or grads or parents of students or grads on here that could give me their thoughts on the uni - anything good, bad or otherwise about any aspect, and particularly about the halls of residence, student support, experiences of the city and the university’s LGBTQ+ community.

I live in Derby and the uni is quite a popular choice for local students. Quite a few friends' DC go there.

It's far from being a top grade uni but some of the specific courses are well rated, for example journalism.

The city is often slated on MN as dire but I like it. It's not a big place tho and if you want touring theatre or big name bands you need to go to Nottingham or Brum.

lots of student halls, many in the city, some very newly built. Not a campus at all, tho there is a main site, but students are on various different sites.

What is this to study? what other options are being looked at?

Studying SEND & Inclusion, so not a huge range of unis to choose from. We’ve visited a few others (Nottingham Trent, Northampton, Cardiff Met), but the course structure and staff were just great at Derby and really clicked with her - even though she wanted campus and knows this isn’t.

Oxford Brookes offers this course and has a lot going on! It’s Oxford so a great place to be. I think Nottingham Trent does this course too. I think Derby is a bit too small for a great university experience.

TizerorFizz · 16/01/2022 16:07

Just to be clear: the Oxford Brookes course is Education studies. However that’s where most grads end up I think!

JuergenSchwarzwald · 19/01/2022 11:24

I think out of the ones you've said I'd choose Cardiff Met, Cardiff is a lovely city. But I haven't been to Derby so can't really comment.

clary · 19/01/2022 19:25

Yes if I were choosing from that list I would go for Notts Trent or Cardiff Met. Both good unis at the less competitive level; Nottingham and Cardiff are both great cities to be a student in. Derby perhaps less so. Notts trent not a campus of course, no idea re Cardiff Met on that.

I studied there in the early 2000s and found it well organised and a positive experience.

The hall are in the city and where all nice

Roloe · 19/01/2022 19:31

Notts trent is campus, isn't it?

bruffin · 19/01/2022 19:34

Oxford is so expensive for accomodation, it's twice the price of Cardiff

TizerorFizz · 19/01/2022 19:49

Yes but not everyone chooses on price! It’s a fantastic city snd Oxford Brookes is higher rated than Cardiff Met. Just below NT.

clary · 19/01/2022 21:30

Well there are various sites of Notts Trent around the city, some certral, some less so, so no, I would not call it a campus. Not in the way that Uni of Nottingham or Warwick or Loughborough are.

Roloe · 19/01/2022 22:40

I didn’t know that. I thought everything was on one site, I’ve heard it described as a ‘beatiful campus’ so many times I assumed it was one.

Ragwort · 19/01/2022 22:46

Nottingham Trent has a city base and a campus site so it depends on the course ... my DS is in the city and loves it, great place to live.

clary · 20/01/2022 00:55

Some of NTU is in the city centre, there is a campus at Clifton, and a friend's DD is on another campus out of town. So it has some campus settings but not all in one place.

It's a great uni tho and a good city too.
