My daughter has come back from an A level choices evening saying she wants to do the IB. I would have thought A levels were more suitable for medical school. Anyone know of someone who has successfully applied to medical school with IB qualifications and what subject combinations did they do?

Yes, my daughter’s friend did. She was super bright and got 45 (maximum points) in the IB. Rejected by Cambridge but very happy at Edinburgh. She did Chemistry, Biology and Maths at higher level, English, I think French, and History at standard level?

The medical school will tell you which subjects they need at higher level.

I'll tell you next year! DD is currently applying with IB (predicted 45 and HL Chemistry, Biology and Maths). Her school has a very good record of IB candidates securing places at medical school. I think the more important question to ask is whether your DD is better suited to IB or A Levels.

How do you tell if someone is better suited to IB or A levels?

Yes, there are several students at my medical school with IB. HL subject requirements are in the Medical Schools Council entry requirements booklet and on individual medical schools' web pages.

IB is regarded similarly to A levels for medicine. Medical students often fit the typical profile of those who would do well with IB, academic generalists who are effective at time management and multitasking.

@GMH74 - there are a couple of recent threads devoted to IB v A levels choice so probably worth looking them up.

DD is doing IB because she's a 'scientist' but has strength in French and humanities. DS1 did A Levels because he couldn't bear the idea of another 2 years of a language. DS2 is doing A Levels because he didn't want to do more English. Both DS1 and DS2 did/are doing 4 A Levels and thought IB would be more work!
