Medical Students - Useful Gifts

LaLaFlottes · 24/11/2021 08:05

Sorry to put this here but I know a lot of parents of Medical students see these posts.

DD is currently a first year at Sheffield. She has her birthday and obviously Christmas coming up and I wondered if there is anything relating to her course that might make a good present?

Anything that's maybe not compulsory to have but is really helpful - any idea at all would be very welcome.

Thank you!

Costa gift cards for when they’re on placement

RampantIvy · 27/11/2021 00:50

Have a look and see if there are any show, bands or comedians on in Sheffield. There are loads of good venues.

ramonaquimby · 27/11/2021 01:28

My daughter is a 2nd year medic - we gave her a skeleton last year for Christmas, and also an anatomy colouring book. She wants to choose her own stethoscope. Books - Being Mortal, when Breath Becomes Air, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. A few other good ideas here, thank you!

ramonaquimby · 27/11/2021 01:40

Apple Pencil. We bought her a MacBook when she started, she had already bought herself an iPad - she’d likely say these have been the most used gifts!

HostessTrolley · 27/11/2021 08:47

At some med schools they are given stethoscopes, lab coats and an iPad, so if they’re at the application stage it’s best to wait and see x

mumsneedwine · 27/11/2021 10:27

Comfy bedding. A weighted blanket. And lots of pillows. The one thing medical students seems to need most is sleep, and the ability to function at 7.45am ward rounds.

Katisha · 27/11/2021 13:22

Waves to @mumsneedwine and @needmoresleep 4 years on! Yes i decided it was time to go to the Wellcome shop only to discover to the security guard's amusement that it wasn't there...(this is no help on medic presents I realise but everything DS and his 4th yr medic friends seem to do is music-related or sport)

Do you know which med schools do this? Just wondering if it's any that DD has applied to!
HostessTrolley · 27/11/2021 17:53

Dd is at imperial - I’m not sure about others x

Lovecatsanddogs · 27/11/2021 19:14

Exeter give IPAD.

LaLaFlottes · 27/11/2021 19:17

Leicester give an iPad Smile

Sheffield don’t but DD has one and also the Apple Pencil and says it’s absolutely brilliant.

I love the law stationery at this place and they do medical range too.

opoponax · 27/11/2021 19:24

I believe they are all different. At the start of the first term, Newcastle med school gives them a set of scrubs and lab coat for hospital placements. DS has taken his own iPad with pencil but says that he isn't using it much yet but still early days. We recently bought him a Littmann III classic stethoscope, although he said he could have waited a bit before buying it.

opoponax · 27/11/2021 19:26

Friend bought DS a compact skeleton for his eighteenth. He loves it and I think it even joined in his flat's Hallowe'en celebrations.

Helspopje · 27/11/2021 19:33

If I went back in time I would want
Nice coffee
A lovely big mug for tea
Keep warm mug
Named metal water bottle
Books
Mini fridge if in halls
Mini instant pot and appropriate recipe books if in a flat
A range of herbs and spices (my mum got one of those lots of mini tins in a big tin that Indian families use and filled it for me)
A cinema subscription or gym subscription
Bike lights
A snuggly hoodie

MidLifeCrisis007 · 27/11/2021 19:53

@Lovecatsanddogs

Exeter give IPAD.
Bother!

I bought DD one yesterday (on a Black Friday deal).

She has an Exeter interview on Wednesday!

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 27/11/2021 19:56

@LoveFall

Sorry finger slipped. Anatomy colouring book was very useful. And good pencils.
Yep I came on to say the anatomy colouring book and the physiology colouring book
RampantIvy · 27/11/2021 19:59

Mini fridge if in halls

Most halls don't allow these unless there is a medical need @Helspopje.

LaLaFlottes · 28/11/2021 21:15

@Helspopje thank you! I just ordered a keep warm mug, some nice coffee, and a hoodie!

So many brilliant ideas - thank you!

Suture practice kits and anatomy colouring books/flashcards are probably the best suggestions.

Some other ideas:

Fob watch
Crocs theatre clogs

A Bristol stool chart mug went down well as a stocking filler one year, as did the pharmacy top trumps from Present Indicative that a PP linked.

Decent non-iron shirts and a steamer made DS's life a whole lot easier on placement but I think he is in scrubs most of the time now.

He also has a 1930s Adam Rouilly anatomy poster and vintage apothecary jar that he picked up at a flea market. She might like something like that?

CouldIhaveaword · 06/12/2021 06:43

Incredibly useful post! I'm also shopping for DD, a first year medical student with a birthday days before Christmas. Many thanks.

Mindgone · 13/12/2021 00:24

My DS’s favourite Christmas present last year was The Quick Roasting Tin recipe book and twos enamel roasting tins! Quick, easy, healthy food makes life nicer. And a range of herbs and spices to go with it would be lovely.
A named water bottle is a great idea.
Am going to look up anatomy colouring books now for F2 DS Xmas Smile

LaLaFlottes · 13/12/2021 07:31

@Mindgone I totally second the roasting tin recipe book. We have the green roasting tin book and it’s fab.
I realised there is now a “sweet” roasting tin version so have added that to the list! It looks really good.

@LaLaFlottes if you’re vegetarian, there’s quite a lot of veggie recipes in the quick book too, and some that can be easily adapted. Thanks, I’ll look out for the sweet one. Another recipe book that I have my eye on is Easy One Tin Bakes, I’m collecting from the library later to try before I buy. The enamel roasting tins are made by Falcon, and very good quality, and wash up beautifully. DS says he feels like he’s in a washing up liquid advert when he washes them! 😂
