SIXTH FORM OR COLLEGE?

CrispsnDips · 17/11/2021 17:33

My daughter wants to, ultimately, be a Paramedic. She is in Year 11 and has high academic ability. I really want her to go to Sixth Form, prior to University, but she’s swaying towards College (maybe a Health and Social Care course)…I am just wondering whether Universities consider College students less favourably than Sixth Form students. What would be the best route…can anyone kindly advise? Many thanks ☺️

They don't care! As long as she has the required entry qualifications and experience if needed (which it is for paramedicine and she'll need a driving license as well).

Where I live schools don't have 6th forms so everyone has to go to college.

It doesn't really matter. Lots of my local schools don't have sixth forms, and the college is outstanding and regularly sends lots of people to Oxbridge. DD will almost certainly go that college, although she is currently at an extremely good school with a great sixth form, because she wants to go to on to art college and the local college has a much better reputation for art.

Check the admissions requirements. Paramedic course has been a degree course for the last 8 years or so - standard entry tariff seems to be around BBC but everyone i know doing it has A levels. I'm sure some of the unis (and maybe all of them) will look at points so just check the websites...

If she has high academic ability, does she not aspire to a higher paying health role?

Not everyone is all about money...

Also, re an earlier comment about 'points', even members of the sainted Kimpton Fitzroy London Group quote entry requirements for many courses in terms of BTEC grades as well as A levels. Applying with the BTEC Extended Diploma instead of A levels doesn't mean that one is restricted to universities quoting UCAS tariff points.

@MarchingFrogs apologies, I didn't realise that. Thank you.
