Maintenance loan in final year

I realise students receive a lower maintenance loan in their final year, but just wondered if anyone knew approximately what percentage less. For some reason I seem to think maybe 25% less? My daughter has received approx £6000 loan previous years, so would it be reasonable to assume approx £4500 next year? Thank you :)

My DS is in his final year and received a similar maintenance loan. I wasn't aware it was reduced.

I hope it’s not reduced, after all their costs are the same, I can understand it reducing if the parent have a change in income.

Would be interested if anyone knows any different.

This is what I'd seen on the UCAS website but it doesn't say by how much unfortunately.

Student finance in your final year of study

In your final year of uni or college, you'll get less Maintenance Loan than you had in other years. This is because student finance usually covers the breaks between each year, but you're no longer entitled to it once your course has ended.

I would get DS to phone them and clarify it.

I think this is only for medicine, where after the fourth year of study students aren't eligible for Student Finance England support but have to apply for an NHS bursary to pay their tuition fees, a non-means-tested grant of £1,000 and a means-tested bursary of up to £2,643 if living away from home or £2,207 if living in the parental home. See 2021-22 guide.

Sorry, missed your post at 15:18. Please ignore mine.

Maintenance loans are based on number of teaching weeks, so you are probably correct about the amount being lower if the final year ends early.

MacNTosh · 09/11/2021 15:29

Dd is in her third year (not medicine) and got less, she’s on the minimum loan so would be £4280 I think she got £3,900 so not a huge difference.

pumpkinpie01 · 09/11/2021 15:30

We thought it would be less too , dd is in 3rd year . However she is actually getting £300 more despite my dh earning more than the previous year .

willselfdestructin10seconds · 09/11/2021 15:32

Yeah much lower, DD called to clarify thinking it was a mistake but no. Told it's because they finish earlier in the year (although student rentals always for whole year tenancy August to August.)

Googled explanation -

@willselfdestructin10seconds that's what I read too and that does make sense but it hasn't happened in our case
