Human Science and similar degrees

Hi wise MN.
My DD is in Y12 doing 4 A'levels, Maths, Biology, Sociology and phsicology (She will probably drop the last one as she is not enjoying it and doesn't have time to do more in depth the other A'levels)
She is thinking on doing Human Science, and would like to get into education/teaching some time in the future. She is interested in Human Science as it looks like quite an "open" degree, meaning that you can study a lot different sides of the human Race. Unfortunately, there no many universities that teach HS. When looking at the SR, is just Oxford, UCL, KCL and Exeter. Would any one know of other degrees similar to HS? She is very capable (all 9 in GCSE) and would like a degree no too specialized.
TIA

How about Anthropology? Particularly Biological Anthropology.

Piggywaspushed · 05/11/2021 17:02

What di you mane by Human Science? I have looked at Exeter and can see no such degree?

If you mean anthropology, many more unis than you list do offer that, including Cambridge's Human, Social and Political Sciences degree which also incorporates sociology.

Is SR Student Room? there are better sources than this for finding out about courses.

Piggywaspushed · 05/11/2021 17:05

Oh , apologies : just seen it at Exeter!

This does sound like a mix of anatomy , biology and anthropology.

Piggywaspushed · 05/11/2021 17:07

Durham offers it too.

titchy · 05/11/2021 17:23

If she wants to teach won't she need a subject that she can teach, so a national curriculum one? Though there may well be enough biology in it.

Piggywaspushed · 05/11/2021 17:26

She could also teach sociology.

CeciCC · 05/11/2021 20:23

Thanks for all the replies.
I'll tell her to look at Anthropology and Biological Anthropology, I've never heard of it.
I'll tell her to look at Durham, thanks.
With the teaching, she wanted first to do primary teaching, however, lockdown and more the first lockdown when they didn't have online lessons, was an eye opener for her, and she realised that she enjoyed having to do the work hershelf instead of just the teacher telling them. and go more into depth into the material. She enjoyed subjects that she would have never imagined she would have, like Chemestry. At one time, she had 7 Alevels that were on the list and she couldn't decide.

Human Sciences is great. I went to one of the universities you mention and had 3 friends doing Human Sciences. One ended up focusing mostly on anthropology, another on geography and the third - despite having nearly applied for straight anthropology - ended up focusing on genetics. So much so in fact that they ended up with a joint honours and have worked in the field of genetics ever since.
For someone who is very academic but uncertain exactly what they want to study it's a really great option.

Thanks. I'll let her read the messages so she knows what to look into.

@CeciCCThis report below might be useful for those considering Human Sciences at Oxford. Looks like a fantastic degree but competitive and only small course - TSA admission test and interviews plus outstanding GCSEs and A level predictions etc needed and some unis offer very different versions to others. Human sciences offered at Exeter Penryn campus and UCL appeared to be similar specifications. DD decided not to apply as preferred Biological Sciences but lots of information on Oxford Uni site.

Fruitygal · 07/11/2021 19:12

On TSR Oxford mum can help if questions about Oxford uni itself

CeciCC · 07/11/2021 22:10

Thanks very much for the information "fruitygal".
@Ginpostersyndrome. My DD was very happy with your comment about your friends studying Human Science and is giving her like a "push" to look more into the different universities which teach Human Science or similar.

DD in 3rd year Health and Human Science (Anthropology) Bsc at Durham and loves it. She’s generally really enjoyed the course

Benjispruce5 · 27/01/2022 17:10

She is academic, had interviews at Oxford too but not successful. She’s glad she went to Durham though. She also had offers from Manchester, Exeter and UCL and Bristol.

CeciCC · 01/02/2022 19:23

@benjispruce5 thank you. We'll look at that as well. Is good to know that your DD likes her course. I think we'll be busy with open days in the summer. Hopefully, they won't be virtual and we can actually visit the universities.
