Beat uni for languages

DD is just starting to look at universities for 2023. She had her heart set on University of London in Paris but after looking closely it just isn't an option for financial reasons.
She wants to do French, possibly with a business element or another language but is overwhelmed by choice.

if she can’t differentiate between the courses on offer then talk about where she wants to go - how far from home, campus or city.

Have you read the "MFL at Uni" thread? That has a lot of useful info.

Diian · 02/11/2021 18:50

Are the fees and loans for UofL Paris, the same for courses in the UK? Is it the cost of living that is financially undoable?

loobylou44 · 02/11/2021 20:04

@Diian it's the cost of living that makes it financially unviable.

@Languagethoughts I haven't seen that thread but will have a look now. Thanks

@mdh2020 all she knows is that she doesn't want to go to a big city like Leeds or Manchester.

DS1 just started at St Andrews, very impressed with course to date, he’d also looked at UoL in Paris but was actually very small student cohort and was not that convinced by the course. Edinburgh and Lancaster have particularly good reputations for MFL too.

Rachie20 · 02/11/2021 22:28

DD very happy doing MFL at Edinburgh. She feels French department is best organised of the various departments (she’s done modules with 4)

TizerorFizz · 03/11/2021 09:46

Business/management with a MFL is fantastic at Bath. One of the best and meets your criteria. Many universities will offer this and the year abroad could be spent in France. Having said that, DD went to Geneva with her French element and found that to be wonderful! More friendly than France!

Other universities to consider would be: Surrey, Southampton, Nottingham, Exeter, Edinburgh, and, although I’ve not checked, Warwick and Lancaster and possibly Loughborough.

She should think carefully about what she wants to learn during this degree as they vary hugely. Is she interested in medieval literature, poetry etc or modern history and culture etc? Some courses are very focussed on the past and some only focussed on the past few decades. Plus some will include linguistics, translation, etc. She could do a joint degree with business/management or some degrees are designed to be languages for business (bath uni has one of these).

VanCleefArpels · 03/11/2021 14:43

All recommendations meaningless without predicted grades

languagelover96 · 03/11/2021 14:45

Consider what she likes. Talk to her about her options and show her a brochure in order to help her decide. Medieval literature forms part of some degrees, while others focus on modern history and culture instead. Yet more are about the past. A joint degree may even do. Tour the university then get her to decide.

The Bath Uni course is 'International Management and Modern Languages'

RampantIvy · 03/11/2021 14:53

The language department at Newcastle is excellent. It also has excellent rail and air links.

Newcastle is also very compact and much smaller than Manchester.

TizerorFizz · 03/11/2021 15:59

It might be international management at Bath but if she’s likely to get good grades it’s a very good course.

I wouldn’t do French on it’s own. It’s too narrow. Adding in business or management iz a good idea
