Liverpool or Manchester

My y13 Dd and I are hoping to visit Liverpool or Manchester this week.

We'd like to visit the university in either of those cities and also get a feel for the city and maybe also look at some of the accommodation.

Can anyone recommend the best places to park in either of these cities and a nice walking route of things to see and do? We'll have her younger sister with us, so need to make it a bit more interesting than the average visit!

Thanks

I don’t think you can get inside university accommodation. The halls of residence will be in line so plot a route around the area based on what you want to pay. Ie avoid most expensive if you cannot afford them!

Overall Manchester is higher ranked but it depends on course and DCs interests. Plenty to see in Liverpool around the renovated docks and there are great museums and interesting areas in central Manchester. I like it’s industrial heritage. Parking: just Google map car parks after you have decided what you want to visit.

Manchester uni is based around Oxford road but some of the accommodation is further out. For Liverpool, you could park at Liverpool One and walk up towards Hope Street, lots of shops, restaurants etc on the way.

For Liverpool it depends how much walking you want to do (and how nice the weather is!). Parking at Liverpool 1 is convenient for seeing the docks and shopping area, which are lovely to wander around. From here it’s a bit of a trek to the uni area (Georgian quarter), but if you park here instead you could wander round the cathedral and there are good (independent) places to eat. Bold street is also interesting. If it was me I’d do the Georgian quarter in the day then drive to Liverpool1 and go out on the dock for dinner. If you have that much time!

In Liverpool, don't park at Liverpool One as it's laughably expensive. Park at the multistorey in Mount Pleasant instead - it's closer to the university and much cheaper.

In Manchester (where a dc is a student) we tend to use the QPark off Medlock Street and he walks over to meet us. You could try the Aquatics Centre car park to be closer to university buildings.

Thanks so much.
We've decided to look at Liverpool this time.
I'm going to look at the parking suggested and aim for the least expensive!

If we park at Mount Pleasant and look at the university, what is the best route then to see the best parts of Liverpool?

From Mount Pleasant, go uphill towards the university area, downhill into city centre.

Unless you have mobility difficulties you won't need to move the car - all of it's walkable.

Mount pleasant car park is only open till 8, so I’d suggest parking on Renshaw Street in the Liverpool Central Secure Car Park (Entrance on Heathfield Street). Then walk up Brownlow Hill to the Uni to look round. You’ll need to walk past a few JMU buildings so make sure you don’t mistake them!

Then when you’ve looked I’d suggest going along Hope Street, Papillon or the Quarter for lunch. Look at the Anglican Cathedral and down Duke Street to see the Chinese Arch. Back along Berry Street to look at the Bombed Out, then down Bold Street, ending up at the docks for dinner.

That’s obviously all for Liverpool!

We liked the museum about the Titanic at the docks. I would do that rather than shop.

Also to say a lot of UoL accom is off campus at green bank, but you could drive past on your way in or out - it’s not far from the motorway if you’ll need the M62
