Help with uni choice - physical education

32 replies

Teesdale2622 · 14/10/2021 21:57

Dd is in year 13 and is keen to study physical education (& coaching?).

Ideally within 2.5hrs of east London.
Ideally near a City
Predicted grades BBC
Campus uni

We can’t seem to find anywhere that’s fits all criteria..

We have the following;
Oxford Brooke’s (not campus)
Chichester (not City)
Brighton (not City) (Eastbourne campus)
Lincoln (not campus)

Are there any we are missing?

Quite a bit of Sports Science at Writtle; it's not just cows and flowers at the HE level (friends of DS2 and DD having done Floristry and Agriculture respectively, there for post-16). Much as love mooching around the shops in Chelmsford, though, as one of the country's dinkiest City centres, it's probably not exactly a nightlife hotspot.

Portsmouth.

Portsmouth isn’t campus based. They’re great for expedition research though as have specialised climate facilities which other places don’t have. They’re well regarded for sports science I think though. Bath and Loughborough want A*AA type grades and Loughborough also ask for a mostly 7 grade profile at GCSE and a minimum of 6 in maths. Bath also require I think a 6 in maths at GCSE. The sports science with coaching courses though often have lower grade requirements. Loughborough may offer a foundation year degree if grades not quite there.

Leeds Becket is supposed to be good. Swansea and UEA also both top 20 sports science courses and may be ok without ABB type grades which lots of the top courses seem to ask for.

Thank you for all the responses, quite a few to take a look at. Really don’t think the grades will go higher than bbc, so does rather limits choices..

Would Derby be too far? They seem to have a good choice of courses and the facilities are excellent. The campus has a good vibe. We went to their open day and my daughter really liked it so is applying for next year.

@Piggywaspushed

Lincoln may not be a campus but it is small and compact and lovely. All the accommodation is close to the uni and the city centre. There is one accommodation block favoured by sports students as it is near the facilities.

OBU does have a campus site with all the sport stuff and plenty of accommodation on that campus. It is really good for sport.

Was also coming on to say that while lincoln might not technically be a campus it has the feel of a small campus uni. The majority of the teaching building, the libraries, the SU building, the student pubs, quite a number of the Halls are all in a pedestrian zone. Certainly everything is very walkable.

It's such a nice easy place to be a student. For those who have come from slightly sheltered backgrounds/smaller towns/ don't want intimidating hugeness etc , you can't go wrong.

It has injected huge amounts of money into the economy of the community too.
