Double diploma in IR - St Andrews and William and Mary

Does anyone know anything about this degree?

It could be a very nice sixth choice for a student interested in IR, but I don't know whether it is considered worth the money it will cost... or indeed if it's particularly difficult to get into (it claims to be highly competitive, but then most of St Andrews' courses are).

Wow that looks amazing! I'd love to know (just for my own curiosity) how much it would end up costing including accommodation.
What a fantastic experience that would be for someone.

Needmoresleep · 05/10/2021 18:17

This also looks interesting (Trinity College Dublin and Columbia.)

But again I don't know much about it. Columbia also has a joint degree with the Sorbonne, but you need good French. Someone's friend's daughter did it and you apparently end up with degrees from both Universities. And from memory much cheaper than attending an Ivy for four years.

rchuhc · 05/10/2021 18:22

Not really worth it in my opinion. More a jolly

Cismyfatarse · 05/10/2021 18:25

I think it is a "private" degree and so charges fees beyond the 9k (or free to Scots) as we looked at it for DD and it was not for UK students.

She is there now and it is done by Americans. Better to do IR but take the year abroad as that gives you fees the usual way.

Thanks everyone! The student is French so would be paying top whack anyway... I hadn't heard about the Columbia/TCD one but good to know it's there!

@shockthemonkey
I’ve actually visited William and Mary in Virginia. The campus is fantastic. It had buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren. They burnt down and were rebuilt but it is beautiful. It’s right near Williamsburg historic town and is a very old university as the bane suggests.

I know the fees are sky high because we chatted to some parents who were there with DC for an open day. Virginia residents get a discount they said. We were told you needed over $50,000 pa to study there if you were not a Virginia resident. I suspect their fees and ours won’t be much different. Private unis in the USA are the normal route for many students.

I also thought the University of Virginia was stunning too . It’s in Charlottesville if you are ever out there. Look at the old student rooms with the fireplaces and rocking chairs. There’s nothing quite like it here and the crinklecrank garden walls! A bit off topic but these universities are historic and great to visit if you are in Virginia.

The fees are shown on the st Andrew’s website £29k and apply for all four years of the degree so for a British applicant I don’t see the point. There are much cheaper ways to have a year abroad (instead of two years abroad) fir way way way less. And it isn’t a double diploma - it is a single degree bearing two institutions’ names.

If money is no object imagine it would be great fun (and is cheaper than four years at w&m) although perhaps a bit bumpy socially.

W&M is lovely.

shockthemonkey · 06/10/2021 12:34

Oh thanks again everyone. I had just assumed double diploma, that's an important point about the single diploma with two names on it. I have seen presentations of W&M and it looks absolutely lovely, for sure.

Wow that looks good !

nolanscrack · 06/10/2021 15:07

William and Mary is a fine place ,but there is no documentary evidence that Wren had anything to do with any of the buildings.

TizerorFizz · 06/10/2021 17:25

The College building design was attributed to Sir Christopher Wren. However it’s still a fine set of university buildings even if that’s incorrect. If money doesn’t matter, why not go there? It’s just one option to look at for this subject. At least there’s an international flavour to it!

Peaseblossum22 · 06/10/2021 17:42

There is a YouTuber who has done this degree. It’s very expensive and the reviews are mixed . I think most people who do it , from both universities are from the US

TizerorFizz · 06/10/2021 17:56

I think one persons view is not enough to judge the course or the university. A French person might find it great for them. There’s nothing wrong with studying with Americans and for IR it could be quite useful! It’s actually a “Public Ivy”. One of only 8 in the USA.

shockthemonkey · 07/10/2021 16:26

Thanks Tizer. Public Ivy is a great way to talk it up - the French love the sound of both words in there!

TizerorFizz · 07/10/2021 16:48

Ha! That’s how William and Mary describes itself.

Etinox · 07/10/2021 16:49

@Eightytwenty

My dc was super interested in this course till he realised the cost of the feed. Massive fees especially when for a Scottish student the standard IR course would be fee-free.
Exactly the same experience here! Wow, looks fantastic, oh, the cost!
TizerorFizz · 07/10/2021 17:25

But if you are an international student, Scotland or USA makes little difference! The student in question is French so pays fees anyway.
