UWE

After a set of spectacularly underwhelming A level results this year, my son didn't get his first choice but has now accepted his insurance offer of UWE for next September .

He is delighted as he loves Bristol and was has been set on the city for a while. . His dad and I are unimpressed that he hasn't got into an RG Uni but are happy that he is happy which after the last year of lockdowns is the most important thing to us.

Anyone got any tips on UWE particularly accommodation ?He'll be studying at the business school on Frenchay campus. He will want city centre accommodation I suspect as he is into the music scene. We don't know Bristol at all.

Gloucester Road in Horfield always used to be popular with UWE students.

Based on posts on the WIWIKAU Facebook group, there has been quite a shortage of student accommodation in Bristol this year. I don't know how UWE accommodation is allocated. If it's first come, first served, I guess your son is in a good position because he already knows he's going to Bristol and can apply early. But if accommodation is allocated in a different way, he needs to be prepared for the fact that the accommodation he's allocated might be different from what he asks for.

So you mean he’s deferred until Sept 22?

I think there might be shared private uni accommodation in the city centre. What’s on uwe web site?

There is some on campus accommodation at Frenchay which as you may know is out of the city but very well served by buses. Living on campus and socialising in the city is really easy. Actually in the city there are lots of student accommodation being built but I imagine they will be expensive, they look very swanky, I also don't know when they are due for completion.

TizerorFizz · 01/10/2021 20:05

Looking at their web site, the accommodation is filtered by location. You don’t have to live where your course is based but obviously you then travel to your course as opposed to falling out of bed 5 mins before a lecture starts. There were quite a few city centre options so look at the prices and location. Bristol has a lot to offer students!

They are certainly established halls and not all are brand new. Some are expensive though.

If you you're here for tips on accommodation why bother with all the "His dad and I are unimpressed that he hasn't got into an RG Uni" thing? You don't need to apologise for it to everyone you come across! It sends a poor message to your son. It's a great city to study in, RG or not.

It's probably easier to live in campus and travel for entertainment, rather than the other way round. Both the student village and Wallscourt offer a variety of accommodation. Easier than getting the bus for 9am lectures. Well located for a variety of supermarkets too.
