Universities with a ‘Brighton vibe’?

Hi all, which universities would you recommend for someone who wants the sort of vibe that you get in Brighton, where no one would bat an eyelid at piercings, extreme hairstyles and very supportive in terms of LGB issues?

So… Brighton but not Brighton?

And maybe where to avoid too, lol!

Why is a thread older than a year old being resurrected? Surely the young person will have chosen by now.

Damn, didn't spot that this was a zombie at all.

Actually it’s still relevant as they had a year out!

Bournemouth has the uni and the arts uni. Their campuses are side by side and students mingle (Dd is sharing her second year house with friends from both institutions)
The town is heaving with students - your DS will certainly find his tribe there!

Liverpool is a fabulous university city. Friendly, inclusive, welcoming.
4 universities there so all kinds of support and activities where any student would be hard pressed not to find something for them. Great art/theatre/music vibe. Lipa. Good access to national and local trains. Probably a lot cheaper to live than Brighton.

Have you looked at either of the Brighton unis? DD is at Sussex, and there is a lot of diversity there. I recently did a course at Brighton Uni and it seemed a bit less diverse, but then she'd only live on campus in first year, then she'd have the whole town to immerse herself in.

I'd be wary of Bristol, Exeter and Warwick due to recent bad press about poor pastoral care, but if those places interest her, perhaps a frank conversation with the pastoral support would reassure.

Manchester. Not a small community like Brighton but v accepting and diverse

Lcb123 · 15/11/2022 10:15

Manchester would be my suggestion, but any big city in fact. Why not Brighton or Sussex unis? I'd prob be more inclined to avoid rural or very trad unis

LisaJool · 18/11/2022 10:01

I'm surprised at the "you find this everywhere" responses. I spent 3 years on a postgrad research programme in a RG uni in a big city about 5 years ago. I cannot recall anyone with distinctive piercings, hair colours or visible tattoos. If they were LGBTQ it wasn't talked about. In fact everyone was fairly 'samey', this was the STEM faculty though. I'd expect to see a lot more 'alternative' at an arts school.
