Dd has just been given £120 she didn’t apply for it

In cash? Or did it go into her account? How do they have her bank details?

FusciasBright21 · 20/09/2021 20:35

I got an award once for good performance in a module or something? Completely unexpected but very welcome! Could be something like that?

User456787888 · 20/09/2021 20:44

It went on to her university portal she’s a first year

Could be a bursary or scholarship payment?

DahliaMacNamara · 20/09/2021 21:36

They quite often do offer bursaries on a sliding scale to students with family income below a certain point. They get that information from student finance. My DC always missed out by about a fiver due to overtime or bonuses from two years back.

SnowyCactuses · 20/09/2021 21:39

Yes they do. I graduated as a mature student last year and a large % of our course got an extra payment or two directly from university if they were within a certain household income threshold Smile

Dunrovi · 20/09/2021 21:42

Maybe there's some element of the course that they were promised as part of the course which can't be taken this year, eg a field trip?
Or perhaps she overpaid for her halls eg paid for a 40 week accommodation contract when her course is only 39 weeks.

RosalieDene · 20/09/2021 21:47

Oh! We got ... £150? Maybe £120 from Southampton for books and stuff. Just, free money.

Sprinklesnight · 21/09/2021 00:48

If you ticked a box when you did student finance to share the amount of maintenance loan you get you could get a bursary without having to apply.

simitra · 21/09/2021 01:05

When I was a mature student i got an extra sum of money into my account but it didnt come from the uni. When I queried it with the lEA (didnt want to have to pay it back) they said it was payment related to the salary Id been earning immediately before comuing to uni. I also got an award from the department when I graduated with a 1st.

Xenia · 21/09/2021 08:28

Not most of them. None of my 5 children ever got a single penny but we are not badly off financially so that might be the reason.

Chasingsquirrels · 21/09/2021 08:33

Ds1 gets about £2,200 from Exeter (1st year) and about £1,600 for subsequent years, split into termly payments (based on student finance application & household income).
His gf gets about £2,000 every year from Leeds.
A friends ds gets £4,000 from UCL (I think), applicable to household incomes upto £60k!
Just depends on what the uni offers but the information will be available.

MatildaJayne · 21/09/2021 15:46

My DS got a £2000 a year bursary from Warwick. This was due to my income being low. Very much appreciated!

bigbluebus · 21/09/2021 15:56

Some Unis offer a sum of money if you get certain A level grades or a certain number of UCAS points.

mimbleandlittlemy · 21/09/2021 21:38

Friend’s dd got £1000 in her first year at Durham as she had got 4 A*s for A level and parental income was low. It was described as an academic bursary award. It was only in Y1 though.
