Oxford or specific college

Hi! Can anyone shed any light on whether it's better to apply to Oxford Uni or a specific college on the UCAS form? Just wondering if it's better to show a passion for a particular college and course or if acceptance is more likely by listing Oxford and being open to all of the colleges. Many thanks!

I don’t know the answer regarding the form but I do know that Oxford Colleges are stronger in certain subjects. Probably best to do some research on each College…

I went ten years ago (I doubt it's changed much) and was told there was no difference in terms of how likely you were to be accepted. If you do decide to go for a specific college, make sure they offer the course you want - not all colleges offer all subjects. However, don't write about how much you love the college in UCAS; they're not interested in that, all they want to know is whether you're academically capable.

I’d express a preference personally. If that college decides not to offer you a space but thinks you are a strong candidate, they will offer you round to other colleges with fewer applications anyway. So I don’t think an open application increased your chances of an offer overall, but a specific application at least gives you a chance of getting a college you like.

My D1's school were advised by Oxford that it really makes no difference to your chances of success. You can express a preference - make sure if you do that the college offers your course - but be prepared to be reallocated to a different college. This is done by central admissions at the beginning of the admissions process, they aim to interview three applicants per place and when they've got their cut off point, the interviews are spread out across the colleges to give everyone more of an equal chance.

Apply for the college of your choice. I'm not quite sure how you would show a passion for your chosen college. Those interviewing you either think you'll fit in or not.

It makes no difference. The interview is about whether you are suitable for the course at Oxford, not the college.
