Anyone still waiting to hear about MA places?

I'm a mature student and decided to bite the bullet and apply for a Humanities subject MA back in July. Application was accepted etc.

Course was due to start in Sept and I still haven't heard! Checked website today and now it says it starts October.

I've emailed them, but meanwhile wondered if something is going on this year - are they holding back on MA places because they have so many UGs?
I'd be living at home and wouldn't need accommodation, but now I wonder if the course is even going to go ahead?

Goodness, that’s a tense situation - hope you get some clear information today.

In the meantime, you’d be very welcome to wander over to here:

It may be that other people are also experiencing unusual delays to their start date - though I’m not aware of any.

What’s your subject?

Ring the Department secretary. They always know what's going on, unlike the academic staff.

This happened to me, I ended up having to chase and chase.

Enrolment time is super busy for unis and colleges but for the MA students were totally forgotten about. I got a call from the Professor of the course in the September talking about me starting without me even having confirmation as she had been told but I hadn't.

Keep on at them but I wouldn't panic.

My daughter was in a similar situation last year. The university was really disorganised and kept losing various bits of her application. They finally offered her a place about 10 days before the course started by which it was too late to hand in her notice at her job. The late notice also meant that she had already missed part of the two-week pre-course module that was compulsory for people like her who didn't have a particular first degree. She deferred until this year.

My advice is to contact them every day. It will annoy them, but it might hurry them up.

OK, so they replied by email from admissions saying I've been given an unconditional offer and apologising "for the delay in this decision being issued" so it makes me wonder if they forgot to contact me!

BUT they want my decision to accept/reject in 48 hours, with proof of funding, and supposedly the course starts on Monday Angry.

It all feels too late now - I think I may have to try to defer.

That’s … ridiculous. Surely?

Had you not accepted before?

Had you applied for and been granted funding (Postgraduate Master’s Loan)?

This is very puzzling.

Jng1 · 16/09/2021 11:11

Nope, I had applied and my application marked as received and pending a decision.
No confirmation of an offer until the email reply to mine this morning.
I haven't applied for PG funding yet as I didn't have an offer!

I think it's a cock-up on their part. It's not leaving me feeling positive about the uni though.

If you can identify your department’s Director of Postgraduate Taught programmes (PGT) and email them directly, you should get some sort of answer. Although this time of the academic year is pretty flat out in terms of UG starters.

And it maybe that your application is caught up in bureaucracy.

KaycePollard · 16/09/2021 16:15

The only funding available generally for PGT in the Humanities is charitable or self-funded via a career bank loan or the like.
