Does anyone know much about the accommodation there?

Particulary The Wolfson Building rooms?
All we can find is one photo on the web site.

I think they've just re-built one of the accomodation buildings, that might explain it? My sister went there, still lots of connections. If you remind me in the morning I can ask her

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 28/08/2021 22:24

I had one of the rooms in the Wolfson building back in the day (about 25 years ago). It wasn't fancy but it was absolutely fine. The building is by the garden, which is lovely to look out onto if you have a room on that side.

What do you want to know? Bear in mind that anything I tell you is decades out of date!

Thanks both.
We wondered what he has to take with him, and what is supplied? I am assuming more info will be forthcoming from St H.
Also, he is 6ft3, so we wondered how big/tall the rooms are!!

The ceilings are a reasonable height, as far as I remember. Normal house height. The rooms are quite small unless you have one of the corner rooms (I had a corner room, just by luck, and it was a lot bigger than my friends' rooms).

When I was there, the rooms had a single bed with a truckle bed underneath, a coffee table, a big desk and some bookshelves, a built in wardrobe and a sink in a cupboard. The bathrooms were communal and had the best baths - enormous, enamel baths, very long and deep. There were communal kitchenettes with a fridge and a cooker.

You used to have to bring all your own appliances eg kettle, toaster and crockery/cutlery/pans etc. I'm sure they will let you know what is supplied and what is not. I assume if it is similar to the Olden Days they won't supply much and he will have to bring it all.

I think I remember having to take towels, bedding and a duvet/pillows too.

that's helpful. Thank you. Smile

Bit more info in the College Handbook www.st-hildas.ox.ac.uk/students/student-handbook

Isn't it the Garden Building that has the larger corner rooms, @ElizabethinherGermanGarden?

www.st-hildas.ox.ac.uk/content/garden-building-0

The top floor of Wolfson has a mansard roof with reduced ceiling height where the external wall slopes in but other that that, the ceiling heights are normal. The rooms are all a decent size with fitted wardrobes, a sink/vanity cupboard, room for a bed, desk and armchair. The rooms at the ends of the corridor are a bit bigger as they incorporate the corridor space IYSWIM? He'll need his own kitchen equipment basics for the shared kitchen and a kettle for his room. Fridges are allowed, if he wants one. Toasters, microwaves etc are allowed in the shared kitchen.

I think Garden does too. I'm actually in college at the moment - have booked a room while I'm working in Oxford. I'm in the new Anniversary building, in much smarter accommodation than back in the day! This is the view from the window...

Very smart! A shame they had to demolish Milham Ford for the new buildings.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 06/09/2021 20:59

I know 😞 But it is really looking good - much better than I had expected.

houselikeashed · 09/09/2021 13:54

Thanks all.
Lets hope he doesn't get a reduced height room at the top!
Not long to go now. exciting times.
We are not very far away, so I guess we can drop stuff off to him as and when he needs it actually.

Hope he has an amazing time!

He should be fine in the top floor rooms, it's just a few feet at the edge of the room. He could put his desk there.

My top tip for all new university students is take a tape measure so you can measure up if you find you need a mattress topper, extra storage, clothes airer or fridge etc.

JulesJules · 09/09/2021 23:15

When DH went to Cambridge, a long time ago 😁, a lot of stuff was provided - bedding, towels, some kitchen stuff etc. He managed to take all his stuff home at the end of every term by train - it was just clothes, books and his radio cassette player! Now, nothing is provided - D1 at Oxford needed all bedding (mattress topper, mattress cover, sheets, duvet, pillows) towels, all kitchen equipment, plates and cutlery, plus extras for her room - extension lead, kettle, (must be on a tray) coffee machine (I sent her one for Oxmas) and mini fridge which would have been allowed but we didn't have room in the car.

houselikeashed · 10/09/2021 18:09

JulesJules

Mini fridge! What a good idea! Will have a look at freecycle. He is trying to source a cheap bike at the moment...
