Experiences of Medicine at uni

Just wondering if those of you with children at uni studying medicine could give their views on the following unis and what type of experience they are having: Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Leicester, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, UEA and Plymouth, Anglia Ruskin. He's just trying to weigh up which ones he would have the best experience at wth which one he can get an interview with!!!

What sort of thing do you want to know? I have a close relative at Liv

Iwab82 · 27/08/2021 17:58

Thanks for your reply.

I suppose just additional information on how they are enjoying the course and for what reasons. How the placements work - it always seems a bit vague on the websites. Are they enjoying social life there as well as the course? Is the course well organised and are the lecturers approachable? I work in HE and I know who chaotic things can be in reality behind the flash website and glossy brochure!! The sort of stuff that isn't that clear on the website. My son is a bit work hard, play hard (sorry a bit of a cringey expression) so just want to see what life is like for medical students in reality. We have looked at all the the life of a Medic stuff online but thought it might be interested to ask on here to get a more warts and all view!

The Student Room would be a better place to ask -- your DS can go on there.

I know a bit about UEA placements in normal times: the students travel in pairs to participating surgeries where they (in pairs) interview patients, learn to take a case history. UEA is hot on some patient contact from early in 1st year onwards. Getting interviewed by gormless students is funny.

In normal times, you can Ask the students directly how much they like their course. The present students are refreshingly honest at Open Days about every aspect of the course & whether they like it or not - after all, they seriously considered many alternatives recently, too.

I imagine Manchester has the best night life.

Can help with Notts as DD there but not in your list.
My other DD is at Reading toon- trying to not think about it (even though she's been before).

Thanks so much for you replies.
NkPatient - thanks for the additional info on UEA. Yes, my son is on various sites too. Just trying to narrow things down a bit now he had his UCAT scores.

Thanks mumsneedwine. I think we felt Notts might be difficult as they score the SJ as part of the interview. Hope your daughter I'd having a great time. My son's loving it!!

@Iwab82 I've not heard from DD since I dropped her off on Weds 😂. However she is a vet student at Bristol so realised I can tell you a bit about that Uni (if not exactly for medicine). She loves the place, even during this last difficult year. Loads to do, fantastic social life and Uni has been pretty good during lockdowns. They seem to be saying as much f2f as they can so let's hope that actually happens. Medics and vets play sports against each other and she has a few Medic friends who seem to be enjoying themselves 😊.

Thethingswedoforlove · 29/08/2021 15:13

@Iwab82 do you mind me asking what you mean by scoring SJ as part of the interview? What is SJ?

mumsneedwine · 29/08/2021 16:53

@Thethingswedoforlove SJ is the Situational Judgement part of the UCAT. About ethics and professional standards. It's ranked from 1 to 4. Some Unis use it as an interview selection tool, others as an interview station and some don't use it at all (although must don't like a 4).

Iwab82 · 29/08/2021 17:08

mumsneedwine - my son's only been in touch because it was one of the conditions of going!! No doubt in 2 year's time when he at uni he won't contact us either!! Bristol is his absolute favourite from the knowledge he has so far but it's a risk that he will probably take as their ucat threshold was really high for 2021. Thethingswedoforlove - yes as said before it's situational judgement. I think if used as part of interview you get highest mark at the SJ interview station for band 1 and so on.
