I can't believe this

DS1 took a gap year, applied to university in January and got unconditional offers from York, Liverpooland Manchester.

He confirmed Manchester and declined the others. On Tuesday after A level results came out for this year's cohort he had all the confirmation emails, and booked on a Campus tour etc.

He just had an email saying sorry you were not successful Shock. And the lines are closed so he can do nothing tonight . I'm not going to sleep.

Perhaps (hopefully) the last email was sent in error. Sorry can not really offer much more, but hope you get it sorted.

MadeForThis · 12/08/2021 20:13

Does the email state why he was unsuccessful? Was it definitely an unconditional offer he accepted?

HeddaGarbled · 12/08/2021 20:15

Probably an error. Get him to check his status on the UCAS website.

AlwaysColdHands · 12/08/2021 20:15

It sounds like an error. If he’s had a previous confirmation email then it really does sound like a mistake and he can chase it up in the morning 👍🏻

beenrumbled · 12/08/2021 20:30

His UCAS tracker still says confirmed. He definitely had unconditional offers. The email he got tonight just said no successful with no reason. Hopefully it is a mistake as I don't know what he will do if not!

If he had an unconditional offer and firmed it has he applied for and had accommodation confirmed? (He should have done) This would surely confirm that they were expecting him?
If not, then is there a chance he thought he had firmed the offer, but hadn't?

mumsneedwine · 12/08/2021 20:48

Screenshot everything. An offer is a legal contract so if he has confirmation of acceptance on UCAS they can't go back on that.
And maybe check on TSR as he might not be the only one if it's a rogue email. I'm sure it will be sorted tomorrow- call his faculty as lines likely to be less busy.

MadeinBelfast · 12/08/2021 20:52

I know this sounds silly but does it just mean he wasn't successful at getting a place on the campus tour or something? If UCAS is still correct then screenshot everything and get him to call admissions first thing. I'm sure it's just an error.

Bobbybobbins · 12/08/2021 20:54

Screenshot everything on UCAS track now and the email of acceptance. Try not to worry too much then on the phone first thing tomorrow.

beenrumbled · 12/08/2021 20:58

He doesn't need accommodation as he is staying local.

I've asked him to screenshot everything. He is convinced tonights email is a mistake and is playing FIFA with his mates while I have a massive panic!

I'll try to relax and see what happens tomorrow. The worst part is having to let him sort it!

I think it’s an error as a couple of other people have tweeted them in the last hour or so about the same email!

beenrumbled · 12/08/2021 21:09

indigoemerald

Ohh that sounds positive

Echoing what @mumsneedwine said. If they made him an offer, and he’d met it then they can’t take the place away. Then making an offer is a binding legal contract.

But do screenshot, get him to send emails now so they’re first in inbox tomorrow and probably tweet as well.

Have a check on the website to see how to get in touch, if staff are still working from home there might not be a number and it could be a live chat/online form.

MargaretThursday · 13/08/2021 01:45

If he achieved the offer, then I don't think they can turn him down without putting themselves in a bit of hot water. Tell him to go onto The Student Room and ask if anyone knows anything.

Could it be that he's not successful on getting on the campus tour booking? That sounds more likely if track is still saying he's confirmed.

Ironoaks · 13/08/2021 08:19

Attached to the place confirmation on Track there is usually an official confirmation letter (AS12).
Suggest he downloads this. I think the most likely explanation is that the email is either an error or is referring to something else e.g. place on campus tour.

MrsEricBana · 13/08/2021 08:22

I think error too BUT not surprised you're alarmed. Hope he can get it sorted quickly.

beenrumbled · 13/08/2021 09:00

Thank you everyone - He has screenshots of everything and is calling them - hopefully he will get through soon - lines open 9am

KidneyBeans · 13/08/2021 09:46

A confirmation is legally binding.
They have to honour it

beenrumbled · 13/08/2021 09:58

Just an update - while he was in the call queue he got another email from the University apologising for the email sent in error last night - they said it was a "data error" and confirmed he still has his place. Phew

I wonder how many people were panicking last night.

OP posts:
Xenia · 13/08/2021 14:17

That's a relief. They should probably pay everyone £100 for all the worry!

PaulGallico · 13/08/2021 14:21

Is that a joke Xenia or is that the world you live in?

Xenia · 13/08/2021 14:33

I never get free money, sadly.....

however as to the amounts some people have started claiming all sorts for things like tiny minor data protection breaches - utterly ludicrous thousand and thousands. Then you get people on the personal injury band wagon saying the email caused them mental stress or PTSD or whatever.

beenrumbled · 13/08/2021 21:54

No compensation claim here Grin just lots of relief!
But what an error to make!
