Dropping out. What do we need to do?

DS has decided not to go back to uni for his 2nd year. I've told him to speak to his tutor in the first instance but what do we need to do? Particularly in order not to be liable for student loan, but also in terms of reapplying for finance and places for Sept 2022. Any advice gratefully received.

He needs to log into his student finance account where he can cancel next years finance.
Complete the process at uni to withdraw (this varies uni to uni - check his student handbook or speak to tutor)
Has he arranged accommodation for next year?

You need to phone the student loans company. Also, get your son to contact the university, you can usually do this sort of thing via student services.

Cross posted there, I think Raven-Parrot's advice is better Grin

No accommodation sorted, so that's something.

Withdrawals normally have to be signed off by the Course Leader so it would be good to contact them and also student services. Student services will be able to give advice on any action that needs to be taken on fees etc.

If no accommodation or commitments like study abroad made for next year then it’s just the two things I’ve mentioned above that are required for withdrawal in the main.
There may also be smaller things - cancelling subscription to uni gym, informing bank if you have a student card, returning library books etc.
He may also want to renew his student card (TOTUM/NUS) for a three year period ASAP so he can keep some discounts…

Thanks for all the advice. I'll make him a list for tomorrow.

Library books. If only.

Better that he realises now rather than return and start his second year. If he's only had one year of study, he will be eligible for support for a new degree if he decides to return to education in future.

If he’s not sure, he could interrupt study for a year? Just a thought, in case he wants to return to the same course. Sometimes there’s a possibility of a transfer to a different course ?
Regardless, he should contact his course leader - at the least they can direct him accordingly.
