Just wondering if anyone else has a DC with a year abroad next year? DD and her friend both had risk assessments done and it's been confirmed they can both go to different countries within the EU. DD's friend has just been told her year abroad is off now due to increasing numbers in Spain. There's so much uncertainty.

DS is due to be heading to France soon for a six month internship as part of his degree.

DD2 is meant to be going to Japan for 9/10 months. Her place is confirmed, as is her accommodation. However, the Japanese embassy won't give her a visa nor will they tell her when they are likely to start issuing them.

DD is really fed up being stuck in limbo. Her UK uni has said that she can do her 3rd year then go in 2022 instead, but she has missed out on house-shares etc.

DD is meant to be going to Mexico in about a week, year abroad for a Spanish degree. Her U.K. university is yet to make a final decision about whether she can go or not.

She’s just been told she can go, needs to be in Mexico for the first of August. Credit cards about to take a hit for a last minute flight. I work in another university and they have said this week that all exchanges to amber list countries can go ahead.

DD1 is off to the USA in two week's time, as part of her Psychology degree year abroad. She has her visa in place, and permission to travel, still the final details to sort out, but barring unforeseen disasters she is good to go.

Those who chose Australia or Canada weren't so lucky, and this year's was cancelled. Not sure about Europe.

IsItShining · 30/07/2021 20:53

One of mine is out there now as his placement (Europe) is June to December. The difficulty is in getting back here -- he's had one jab and needs the other in a defined timeframe, but that will mean 10 days quarantine here, have jab, test, go back and quarantine again, and his boss is not at all keen on a fortnight or more's absence at their busiest time.

Everything is set for departure to Mexico tomorrow. It has proved totally impossible to persuade the Scottish NHS to give an early second vaccination ( although we know plenty of people who have had them in England, which is infuriating). She will probably pop into the US (where her father lives currently and she has a visa for) to pick up a second one. Not being able to fly via the US has cost an arm and a leg, but hopefully she’ll be able to go back that way after Christmas and once she’s been in Mexico for two weeks she can travel to the US freely. Her university is also allowing travel to Canada, it all seems a bit of a lottery out there.

DD will be doing the first part of her year remotely from her UK university. She hopes to be able to go out there later this year or early next year. The Japanese university are being excellent though, as are the UK one. The embassy is less than helpful.

FoolsAssassin · 31/07/2021 17:57

Malbec my sympathies. We went through it all this year. Was a nightmare trying to get the TB (I think) confirmation the Embassy wanted and they were not helpful. DD ended up doing it remotely. The time change in October did her over though as ended up starting at 5.45am.

There was a small window of opportunity to go at one point but her host university did all classes on line so she would have been stuck in halls studying online and loads of the foreign students didn’t go over so I was very relieved she stayed.

Sunndowne · 01/08/2021 09:28

Isitshining, my sympathies. The whole jab thing is tricky.

My DD has just completed her YA and had a fabulous time. Her European city had very sensible restrictions the whole time so there was never a complete lockdown. Luckily, there were lots of students there too.

We know many students didn't get abroad or did so for a short time. Others were a bit more restricted in some places.

I think it should be better this year.

Good to find others in this situation. DS was due to spend next year in Jordan, heard mid July it was definitely off and would have to study online next year. (He is deaf and finds online very difficult so was considering dropping out). A week later they heard the the half of his course who were due to go to Morocco were allowed to go . He managed to arrange a transfer to this group so now needs to get himself to Morocco by 6th September. All arrangements are down to them so there is lots to do but relieved he is actually going.

Chemenger · 01/08/2021 10:18

She’s off, just back from the airport. It’s been a rollercoaster of a week but hopefully she’ll be fine once she gets there. Good luck to everyone else.

Chemenger · 06/08/2021 11:48

Mexico is going red, let’s hope that changes before Christmas. The good news is that she arrived safely and has found an apartment near the campus for the princely sum of £144 a month.

MoreRainThanAnyYet · 06/08/2021 12:03

Good for her, Chemenger! (And how are you feeling about it all?)

Chemenger · 06/08/2021 12:18

It’s fine, we saw so little of her last year due to lockdowns etc that it doesn’t feel that different. We are used to being thousands of miles apart as a family which does help. I won’t say it wasn’t a sleepless night while she was travelling though!

Sunndowne · 07/08/2021 10:27

Good luck chemenger. Hope it goes well.

Chemenger · 11/08/2021 07:05

The good news is that she was having a great time. The bad news is that she has covid. Just tested positive. Which was pretty much inevitable given that they’ve just had a full on freshers week. But thank you Nicola Sturgeon for not allowing early second vaccinations.
