Results day dilemma

DD is holding an unconditional offer but would prefer a different course that required higher grades than DD was predicted. It looks like DD may get the higher grades and the preferred course is in clearing.

What is the best thing to do? Can you get released from an unconditional offer and go into clearing/adjustment with higher grades.

DD will phone on results day if things go well, but just wanted to advice.

She’d be able to go into clearing on results day. Just needs to get the unconditional to release her. Not sure about adjustment with an unconditional? If she does better than her predicted grades, I think so.

Doing a bit of Googling suggests that if you’ve accepted an unconditional offer you can’t use adjustment, but should be able to use clearing.

@SeasonFinale might be able to confirm.

I can't see why you wouldn't be able to use adjustment with an unconditional offer: UCAS seems to say that anyone can use it as long as they've met and exceeded the terms of their offer, and that's certainly the case with an unconditional offer. I don't have any experience of this though.

This guide says you can still use adjustment but I couldn’t find anything on the UCAS website. Maybe contact UCAS?

Join the WIWIKAU Facebook group and ask there or ask ucas on social media?

The UCAS website describes having met and exceeded the conditions of your conditional firm offer - with a 'conditional if firmed' offer, it could be said that there are no conditions to meet on results day, as the place is yours regardless of grades achieved (and another way of looking at it is that the only 'condition' you had to meet to get the offer to be unconditional was to make it your firm choice and nothing that happens on results day can 'exceed' that). Certainly, the advisor on TSR interprets it that way.

However, one way of finding out for sure is to see if on results day, the results do meet and exceed the original grade conditions and the 'Register for Adjustment' button appears? www.ucas.com/ucas/undergraduate/apply-and-track/results/ucas-adjustment-if-youve-done-better-expected
