Offer but with a Foundation Year.

I've been offered a place at Uni.

I applied for the standard BA Honours Three Year Course but they have come back and offered it to me with a Foundation Year. I guess because I don't have any Level Three Qualifications or A Levels.

I really don't want to do the Foundation Year. I will if I have to obviously but I'd really rather not. Is there anything I can do or is this pretty much the final decision? I have accepted the offer. I'm also a mature student in my late twenties.

Hi OP, both of my DC had strong A level results (mostly As) but both were required to undertake a foundation year before commencing their respective degree courses, so I don't think the requirement is necessarily because you haven't got A levels. Their degree subjects were also in the creative field (one Model Making and Technical Effects, and one Design for Performance). They both did a foundation year in Art and Design, even though they both had A level Art and DT and one had completed the Gold Art Award in 6th form.

I think the uni's want to ensure all 1st year undergrads are up to a certain standard, so that they can begin teaching from a set level rather than having to level everyone up, if you get what I mean?

Thank you! Such a helpful post. I quite like the sound of what you've described and can definitely see how useful a Foundation Year can be.

You're very welcome - hope it will turn out to be a great year, whatever level you enter at.

Good luck - it sounds like you’ll have a great time!

and being aware that 18 year olds are being accepted onto the course but I've got to do the Foundation first

But you don’t gave the qualifications an 18 year accepted onto the course has!

I’ve taught lots of mature entry undergrads - they’re fantastic but they often struggle. Take the offer of a Foundation year and use it to ease yourself back into structured learning.

And try to get over any comparison between yourself and your fellow students around age. It won’t help you, and it might annoy other students.

Just enjoy the opportunities university offers you.

You’ll be great!!

I really like teaching undergrads who know why they want to be there, not just because it’s the “done thing”.
