Particularly fantastic less-conventional undergrad degree courses

I would be really interested in hearing what people think are really interesting and perhaps less considered degree courses available to undergrads at UK universities. I don’t really mean a list of unis that people thinks are great for chemistry, but rather those slightly niche courses run in fantastic departments that maybe people don’t generally know even exist, or in any event are outside the usual A level departments.

So I’m thinking of, for example, War Studies at Kings College London - internationally renowned, different to what you might think of from the name, highly attractive to employers.
I would add Landscape Architecture at Sheffield - the best course in the UK, probably in Europe, a jewel of a department with fabulous teaching and cameraderie, extremely high employment rates, probably not thought about by kids who re attracted by architecture but arguably can lead to a better paid and more fulfilling career.
Also Oceanography at Southampton - world-leading and world-respected, broad ranging multidisciplinary science/geography/ and environmental degree leading to a number of different careers, becoming more topical by the day re climate change.

Or

I’m sure there are lots of others - what degrees/departments can you recommend which are out of the ordinary run of things, for our kids to think about? Particularly hearing from employers who hire out of particular courses - what makes those kids so employable?

@Piggywaspushed what is your DS doing at Lincoln? My DS went to the open day and was really impressed with the Politics course. He liked the FCO and Parliamentary module and the Model UN etc that they do. Is that now what happens when you are there? We also went to see Aber. DS was also unimpressed with the campus ( although we had a lovely afternoon on the seafront afterwards!)
LOL Ive just noticed how old this is too! I wonder how @Piggywaspushed DS did?

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2025 20:34

Ha! Hi, I'm here.

He's finished hus politics degree, got a Masters in Policy.

He now works in a home store...don't ask!

But he did love Lincoln.

RainbowBagels · 20/08/2025 20:48

Thanks @Piggywaspushed! Yes I quite liked Lincoln! Was it difficult for your DS to get a job in politics etc after finishing or did he just have enough?
We are going to see UEA and both Nottingham ones next. Its hard to narrow down!On the off chance as the open day was during our holiday in Wales we went to Bangor. My goodness what a beautiful place it is! We were too busy looking at the view to take much notice of the course though!

Yes, it's tough. It's a common degree to have.

Bangor is stunning.

Bangor scenery lovely, up the hill around the uni lovely. But I fear you probably didn't walk down the hill and along the High Street. The most collapsed high street I've ever seen, in any town in the UK. Deserted, boarded up. Astonishing. I asked a shopkeeper. Reply was: "the students do all their shopping on Amazon, this town has died". Beware.

No we didn't. I have heard that though. Such a shame. It isn't on DS's list anyway.

That’s a real shame to hear that about Bangor. Bangor is on my DDs potential list. I suppose we shall just have to see it for ourselves on our visit.
