Where for History?

Apart from Oxbridge, Durham, St Andrew's, Exeter, where else would you recommend for a (probably) 3xAs student? Doesn't have a specific area of interest.

They are very far apart geographically! Does that not matter?

I'd say York is missing from that list for history reputation, and possibly Warwick. But there are many unis with very interesting history degrees : also Lancaster, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton, Glasgow.

olliepolly · 30/06/2021 20:08

Bristol

aibutohavethisusername · 30/06/2021 20:38

My DD is at UCL, her insurance was Exeter.

aibutohavethisusername · 30/06/2021 20:39

Oh and she also applied to Oxford, York & Queen Mary’s.

GlencoraP · 30/06/2021 20:48

York , QMUL, Kings and Exeter . She really needs to look at the sort of modules and options available because there can be quite a big difference , whilst of course being aware that individual modules may change

Jalfrezi · 30/06/2021 20:51

I would also agree with York, Warwick, Bristol and UCL. Also maybe Edinburgh if you are considering St Andrews.
In fact all the ones mentioned so far by others are great universities. You can't really go wrong with any of them in terms of prestige. You then just need to delve deeper into course differences to decide which ones match your interests and then whether you want big city/smaller city/campus or if nightlife is important etc.

Cleverpolly3 · 30/06/2021 20:52

Warwick

UmpteenthTime · 30/06/2021 20:54

York and Warwick

FelicityPike · 30/06/2021 20:58

Glasgow

looptheloopinahulahoop · 30/06/2021 21:19

All of the above and another mention for Southampton, which has a very wide and interesting range of options.

They are very far apart geographically! Does that not matter? - sorry wasn't clear: looked at the league tables and the 5 in my OP came up. Not applying for those others apart from Exeter at the moment.

Not sure if she wants London as that is home.

Options/modules are very general - she doesn't really have a preferance. Anyone know what Birmingham is like for History?

My dd's best friend has just finished second year history at Warwick. Really enjoying it - loves the course.

Abetes · 01/07/2021 10:36

Sorry - forgot to say - don't know what the standard offer is but she got 3As

GCAcademic · 01/07/2021 10:57

@UmpteenthTime

York and Warwick
Just what I was going to say.
SingingSands · 01/07/2021 15:49

Manchester

Piggywaspushed · 01/07/2021 16:05

Birmingham is very good for history. Lots of social history units.

Lots if my students of high ability have chosen Nottingham and Birmingham recently for history.

Piggywaspushed · 01/07/2021 16:06

Ha! I thought umpteenthtime was a comment, but it's a username!!

Dobbyisahouseelf · 01/07/2021 16:08

A friend's DD did History at Warwick and thoroughly enjoyed her time at uni.

History is a big subject.
What is her area of interest?

Lincoln has an interesting linguistics department.

Chilldonaldchill · 02/07/2021 16:21

DD has an offer from Cambridge for history.
She didn't want a campus university so that really narrowed the list - otherwise Exeter, York, Warwick and possibly Birmingham would have made her shortlist.
Bristol is her insurance and she would have been very happy to go there - she thought the course and the uni looked great. Durham was also on her list but she was much more cautious about going to such a small city.
She also liked the look of the course at UCL, LSE, Edinburgh and Sheffield.

Chilldonaldchill · 02/07/2021 16:22

Oh and Nottingham would have been on the list if she'd been prepared to go to a campus uni.

pourmeanotherglass · 12/07/2021 22:48

DD is currently looking ( she is year 12) and wants to do history with ancient history.

She likes the look of Cardiff and Exeter but hasnt picked another 3 yet. She wants to avoid big cities, also Bristol ( because we live here), and Warwick because her sister is going there.
She is def not doing early entry so has plenty of time. She tends to leave everything ( homework, revision, A level choices ) until the last possible minute before the deadline, so isnt looking very actively yet.

AvocadoPlant · 15/07/2021 11:39

York and Durham might be good ones to add to her list?
