Sports degrees-which uni??

Dc is looking to apply for 2022. So need to start thinking about checking places out -virtually !
Any suggestions as to which unis are good for sports/sports & nutrition type degrees.
I don't think DC is 100% set on a particular course but is interested in the above. They are quite a social being(!) and would enjoy clubs and societies at uni I think. Is also quite keen on being more northern as opposed to London/south coast.
Any ideas gratefully received.

Loughborough?

CatCup · 03/05/2021 17:44

Loughborough for sport

Yes, we know it's great but does it err on the sports sciences more...if that makes sense?

Loughborough, Bath, Stirling

Durham do sports science. Nottingham is sports Uni of the year. So many options it might be worth having a look at UCAS website to narrow down options.

Nottingham was one of my suggestions. DC is county standard at their sport... would that influence if a uni would be more interested in them? Loughborough is likely to be high offers. Dc is capable but would be good to have realistic options too
They have been looking at UCAS site ...just sooo many options.
I don't remember it being this difficult when I went. Think I just saw a course , kinda liked the sound of the city and thought 'why not...'

Nottingham has been the number one uni for sports for several years.

mumsneedwine · 03/05/2021 19:03

@123rd DD is at Notts if have any questions. Doing medicine but has done some work with sports scientists and physios. Loads of sports, many students at National standard, but anyone can play as so many teams.

SeasonFinale · 03/05/2021 19:11

What sort of predicted grades are they expecting to get?

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 03/05/2021 19:12

Oxford Brookes used to, don't know whether they still offer it

lovelyupnorth · 03/05/2021 19:26

My dd is at Nottingham as well.

ChocAuVin · 03/05/2021 19:27

Birmingham seems to have good sports facilities.

King's offers a degree in Sport and Exercise Medical Sciences, which may have more on the nutrition side. But may be too far south / DC not keen on London?

VanCleefArpels · 05/05/2021 10:20

Leeds Beckett is well thought of for sports sciences/analysis and a great city to live in

VanCleefArpels · 05/05/2021 10:21

You should really drill down on employment / employability stats for these types of courses. You may end up as a graduate with lots of skills in a very niche area with few openings.

ChateauMargaux · 05/05/2021 10:28

Also take a look.at what sport he plays and how likely it is he will get to play at a decent level at his uni of choice.

Middersweekly · 05/05/2021 11:39

I was going to suggest Nottingham too and also Portsmouth as it has a Gold TEF award. My niece went there and did Sports science and nutrition. She had a great time! Plenty of opportunities for P/T work alongside. Very active social life if your DS likes that sort of thing.

GoldenRuby · 05/05/2021 11:50

UEA has a PESH degree - Physical Education, Sport and Health. It also has just PE, and Sports Development. Great sports park on campus.

Thanks for all of the comments.

Northumbria has a range of sport-related courses, and might be a good option for slightly lower tariff offers. He'd get to be in Newcastle too, which ticks the location and social boxes.

Ginmakesitallok · 05/05/2021 15:55

Abertay in Dundee has well thought of sports and exercise courses.

clary · 05/05/2021 16:22

DS2 (yr 13) is hoping to go to Loughborough to do biology (or their version of) but he does PE A level and a good deal of his mates looked at it for sport/sport science.

AAB fairly typical offer. It's not RG but has a gold TEF and really good rating for student satisfaction and employment.

Not northern tho (mind you I have heard Nottingham described as "really northern" so what do I know!). Also not a big city.

One thing that helped with both DS and DD (in second year) was to think about how far away they wanted to be and did they want campus or city uni. SO for example dd wanted to be an easy distance but not a city, so she didn't like Sheffield but liked Warwick (we are in East Mids).

The distance is more relevant than I thought; I am glad she is somewhere pretty near. A friend has a child at uni a good four hours + drive away and it has been a bit of a pain. No possibility of driving down for the day or vice versa.

minniemomo · 05/05/2021 16:24

Even at county standard, unless they have the predicted grades they are unlikely to get an offer. AAC means some Russell group universities might be out of reach but check individual requirements, they might give extra points for sports.

allmycats · 05/05/2021 16:54

Loughborough is good for sports science subjects but not so good if you want to play sports UNLESS you are an elite athlete, that means International standard. Sheffield Hallam, UWIC, Leeds Becket and Bath would be my recommendation. I am involved with a sports governing body so have some back ground knowledge
