Looking at Winchester, Bournemouth & although would love dd to stay in the south, obviously we have to look at all options.

DD has looked at Falmouth online but worried it’ll be a bit remote & niche, as it’s a creative Uni & she doesn’t want to feel intimidated or not fit in.
Any advice or experiences, good or bad would be very welcome

Oxford Brookes?

Bit of a “who you know” industry and no jobs right now. No such thing as best university really because anyone can do the job - without a degree or with any degree. So just choose a nice place to be. Oxford is great and so is Bournemouth. Falmouth is miles from anywhere. Getting contacts, working and networking will serve her best.

I’m not sure about the courses so can’t help with that but would suggest that DD looks at the types of courses and the modules.

Event Management is fairly wide and although it’s an industry that has been hit badly, jobs are starting to come up again and the industry will recover.

Event Management could cover large scale public events, festivals, events in hotels, events in venues, conferences, concerts, weddings, sporting events - all sorts really. Maybe if DD has an idea of which type of events she would like to work on, she could check the focus of the courses and see which match best?

It might be worthwhile seeing if any of the courses have a marketing element too as this could be useful.

Good luck to your DD I hope she finds a course she enjoys.

I wouldn’t bother doing a degree in Event management - I don’t think the investment would pay off. If a degree is essential I would do something more generic business studies and marketing or even finance and marketing. Although creative, the best EMs I have worked with have a varied background and are strong PMs. The industry is on its knees at the moment and I would encourage her to keep her options open

It’s a degree nice girls with connections do when they cannot think of anything else. I’m sorry to say that but it’s far too narrow. The degrees suggested above leave more options open, including event management.

Any degree where you can do the job just as well without it doesn't seem like a great investment of time snd money. Perhaps if someone is can looking for a reasonably easy time for three years but honestly.

Who would advise anyone to accumulate debt got a degree in event management?

Legwarmers · 27/04/2021 21:23

A friend of mine is i. This job now. She did a business degree I think

Started with civil service then one or two other jobs then moved to A well known US entertainment brand as a PA and now a major tech brand as an events coordinator earning 60k plus. She said event management for major industries moved online so her tech skills saved her. Not to sound snooty but She would never have done an Events Management degree and none of her colleagues have this degree - they are all business and marketing or IT and finance graduates.

QueenofDestruction · 27/04/2021 21:23

It does seem like a waste of money to me, my employer hires an event planner with a degree in art and and MBA but she also has a title. I agree with posters suggesting something more marketing and business related, they sound more future proof and to be honest a degree in event planning sounds like a bit of a mickey mouse degree.

TokyoSushi · 27/04/2021 21:25

I used to manage a team of event planners, I don't have a degree. She'd be better looking at something like business/marketing which will be useful for the event management.

Thank you for all Eve replies. DD had a meeting with her head of sixth form today who is really helpful & knowledgeable.
She has advised dd to look at Oxford Brookes Marketing & Event Management rather than pure EM. DD is studying BTECH Business & really enjoying the course with great results so far so is very keen to incorporate marketing too. She’s looked T OB’s Uni and really likes the look of it

I would look at business and marketing if she’s doing business already. Event work can be done afterwards. It really isn’t what her school should be suggesting and it shows limited knowledge of the world of work I’m afraid. I bet the head of 6th has taught all her life! Do a broad degree and get into the work afterwards if she can. The broad degree keeps possibilities open and doesn’t close them off.

Another vote for a business and marketing degree here. Really useful and flexible.

Oxford Brooks is great by the way.

Could you look at getting interview or discussion / advice for her from another source just so that she has something to compare with school. As she is already doing business at Level 3 and enjoys it I would expect her to receive better and more aspirational advice . Maybe she could speak to recruiting departments or agencies of well known industries.
