What year, subject, where in the country?
Dd, 2nd year, languages, South -
50 % socially distanced f2f until December, online since then

Well I had no way of knowing that, as I say I was just trying to help, there is no need to bite my head off

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 14/04/2021 21:41

1st year science subject, Bristol.

Not one single f2F encounter or even visit to campus until a single lag session the week before the Easter break.

I am really disgusted.

Delphi £2600 per term is quite a high Maintenance loan. Most kids get less. Rents of £120 per week (51 week) are pretty cheap most sites are more

The mismatch between the cost of living for students
and the funding they can access
is disgusting

sadly many MN parents have the funds to top their kids up
so do not realise

ragged · 14/04/2021 21:54

yr1, vocational course, maybe 2 hours/term.

LizzieMacQueen · 14/04/2021 23:39

@mumsiedarlingrevolta - petition is up to 9,813 !!!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2021 23:44

4th year engineer, Cambridge
I'm not sure if she's had any f2f this year, but she says the online lectures, problem classes etc have been good - in some cases an improvement.

user1497207191 · 15/04/2021 10:08

DS 1st year Maths at Lancaster.
None of his lecturers have been on campus all year.
He's had just 2 small group tutorials done by phd students.

Fantastic but I honestly can't believe the students/their parents aren't signing in droves!!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 15/04/2021 17:09

oooooh I just looked-petition over 10,000 now!!!!!

SusannahSophia · 16/04/2021 16:58

First year maths
0% f2f and none planned for the rest of the year.
Only met 7 other people.

Delphigirl · 16/04/2021 17:12

That’s crappy @SusannahSophia 😱
Which uni?
Your poor DC...

SusannahSophia · 16/04/2021 18:41

Manchester, Delphigirl. They were planning on small group F2F in September but cases went through the roof once students arrived back. You can see the spike on the Manchester graph.

irregularegular · 16/04/2021 18:47

Zero. First year, languages, Oxbridge.

I teach at Oxford myself and gave some small class/tutorial teaching in person in the Autumn, but my daughter's tutors chose not to.

irregularegular · 16/04/2021 18:50

Neither my daughter nor my students feel they have missed out hugely in narrow academic terms. They have had the same personalised teaching in pairs/threes online that they get in person. It's not the same, but it's not that bad either. It is the whole social/extra stuff that is missing.

chopc · 16/04/2021 19:01

Even if the big lectures need to be online for health and safety purposes I hope the rest of Uni life opens with the Covid restrictions that are in line with the rest of the country. Boris plans there to be none after June I thought?

The variation and personal decision making in this has been so frustrating

Exactly.

Where the schools that students will have attended up to a couple of months before are back in full, and where other aspects of life such as transport, restaurants, entertainment are also back, there seems very little that prevents university students having everything other than lectures in person.

Yes, with masks where social distancing is not possible and with ventilation, if schools are still requiring masks and ventilation. Yes, with lateral flow testing twice a week if that is still common in many workplaces. Yes with check-in systems for bars, canteens etc to enable track and tracing if that is still the case for restaurants in the community. Yes with a staggered travel / arrival process so that movement across the country is staggered.

But the justification for anything other than lectures to be online seems very tenuous. It would be like schools saying 'oh, we can't rer-open in full because the guidance last summer said we can oly have 15 in a group'. Guidance for universities should move on in lockstep with similar educational and other institutions, not assuming that e.g. social distancing must be maintained for anything to be open at all. especially as students, unlike school children, should all have at least one dose of the vaccine by the start of the Sutumn term. If CV / CEV / older teachers, supermarket workers, nurses and others are in work, then universities cannot use the 'we have CEV / CV / older lecturers' line to keep themselves closed. If anyone can move across the country for a holiday in self-catered or catered accommodation, they can be allowed to do so for university.

TheFallenMadonna · 16/04/2021 19:22

1st year. History. London. Three f2f tutorials a week in first term. Fully online since Christmas. Has had 1 to 1s with some tutors when required (online). Going back next week, but still fully online. He likes online lectures (lazy) but prefers f2f tutorials to online.

aibutohavethisusername · 16/04/2021 19:45

@TheFallenMadonna which Uni? DD is History at UCL.

chopc · 16/04/2021 20:30

@aibutohavethisusername what has it been like for your DC at UCL this year? Sorry if it has been mentioned above

aibutohavethisusername · 16/04/2021 20:38

@chopc she has had one f2f lecture all year. She is enjoying the course but hasn’t met anyone at all.

chopc · 16/04/2021 20:45

@aibutohavethisusername is she living near campus or at home if home is not in London? That sounds utterly depressing 😔

aibutohavethisusername · 16/04/2021 21:08

@chopc at home since December, going back Sunday. In private halls, in Kings Cross, but only one other student in her flat.

chopc · 16/04/2021 21:32

@aibutohavethisusername thanks for the info. Sounds utterly depressing. Hope she was able to attend at least one cocktail night at the Union ......

aibutohavethisusername · 16/04/2021 21:36

Sadly not, she had a coffee once after the f2f. I’m hoping she won’t be too depressed when she goes back.
