Good A level choices?

DD currently in Yr11 has no idea on what she wants to do career / uni wise at present, but wants to take English, Film Studies and Art A levels.

I would really appreciate your opinion on:

  1. is this a good combination? Are English and Film Studies too similar?

  2. if DD decides not to take Art at Uni, will having an Art A Level disadvantage her getting a place at a top Uni to take eg English? (Not Oxbridge but next tier down for example)

No help from school and Uni websites vague. Thanks!

Best to keep options open then, definitely.

@NewYearNewTwatName

Thank you piggy and titchy

talking to him again, he enjoys biology and doesn't want to rule out some kind of sciency career.

So I guess his choices are just right for him. as they are all stuff he likes and enjoys. he just doesn't know what he wants to do in the long run.

In that case Maths and Biology would be a good basis for a science career. And Maths and Economics good for a social science focus. So sorted then!

One of mine is at a RG university and did sociology, media studies and photography A levels. A friend’s daughter was at Bristol doing English, and did English, drama and art A levels.

I work in Corporate finance and historically we looked for the more traditional A levels and degree subjects. This has changed now and we’re more interested in good all round education with high grades but a range of types of subjects is favourable.

Parker231 · 04/04/2021 20:29

Also in our application process those selecting graduates to interview don’t know where the candidate went to Uni. It’s no longer relevant in getting good recruits.

titchy Good know thanks. as you can tell as a family we're pretty clueless 😂

Just make her aware the Art portfolio is almost never ending and I have only ever known one more time consuming subject and that was ICT.

@Parker231, that's encouraging - no need to ask @Piggywaspushed if she produces framed copies of Perhaps employers need to update themselves after allGrin.

If she was to apply to art foundation I would wonder why she (it is a she? Sorry if I've mixed them up) didn't do art A level. Though I googled it and the good school guide says you need Art A level or Btec to get on a course. There are always exceptions but I can't imagine doing three non art A levels PLUS getting a portfolio together in your own time good enough for entry.
I thought the foundation year was to help them explore the subject more and decide which area they might want to pursue - it is such a broad field.
My daughter is doing Art, History and was torn between biology or psychology, but opted for the latter as her alternative interest (if not art) is anthropology or sociology.
