University course ideas

My nephew is in year 12 and will be applying to uni next year.

He is taking A levels in economics, geography and history. He is likely to be predicted BBB-BCC (although he got a 9 for history GCSE and a few As, Bs and C grades). He's reasonable at maths - 5/6 GCSE I think.

He has no idea which course and university to apply for. He enjoys economics the most but as his maths isn't stellar he is unsure whether this is an issue.

I was thinking some kind of social science/liberal arts.

I'd be grateful for any ideas or words of wisdom.

Thanks!

My DS does too of those. If he likes the geography bit , he could look at Southampton's Population Studies degree. It is like a mix between geography, social sciences and economics. Grades needed are higher, mind.

Otherwise, he could certainly do history , social sciences, social policy.

Liberal arts is v competitive for entry nd requires quite a broad church of tastes and abilities.

too = two !

I am not sure economics as a main component of a degree is a good idea - some unis do BA degree which are less mathsy but they are still pretty much maths!

SeasonFinale · 29/03/2021 19:50

Hi Aurea, Most economics degrees require Maths A level but there are some that are BA Economics and don't but offhand they wouldn't be at that level A level predictions.

There are however other business type degrees that he might like instead. This whatuni link throws up some (including a Business and Economics BA at Kent) www.whatuni.com/degree-courses/search?subject=business&score=0,120&pageno=2

Good luck aurea. I know its your nephew not DS but we do have a nice year 12 thread running on Secondary boards.

Why does he have to go to uni from school?
Why not work for a couple of years, get an apprenticeship, or work experience then make a decision?

SeasonFinale · 31/03/2021 18:18

@Aurea I did wonder whether he might want to look at the degree apprenticeships from places like PwC and Deloittes. They would be applicable for his potential grades too.

Surveying? Perhaps one of the more general courses rather than quantity surveying.

Will have modules of economics, law and some maths elements, plus usually good employment prospects.

Archaeology or anthropology?

Aurea · 01/04/2021 08:52

Thank you all. I'll pass these suggestions on; I hadn't though of some of them.

Many thanks.
