@sammyjoanne great results for your dd! Ds got his results too, he was very happy although felt he could have done a bit better on the Spanish speaking exam. Hopefully next year he'll get more than 30 minutes a week with five other students on zoom for that! Languages must be v hard to learn remotely. He's had a very fun filled holiday so far, lots of meeting up with home and uni friends and two nights away with us for meals out and shopping. Have to say Covid is rife round here. His second jab is booked for august just before Leeds festival. Hope everyone's dc are ok and exam results are what they wanted

sammyjoanne · 21/07/2021 08:44

@SusannahSophia hope your DS does well, keep us posted :)

@Daisysway that's a shame on DDs school friends. I don't know about your DD, but for DD1 it always seems to be this huge challenge to get together as a group and if 1 cant make it, the others wont meet until they all can. Nice you had a long weekend away. Hopefully Reading is on; it would be really nice if the festivals are going ahead.

@specialted pleased your DS got great results too. It has been challenging to learn remotely, hoping next year would be better. DD group chat, flatmates seem to have done fine, but couple of physics friends are challenging as they didn't get the ones they wanted.
Glad he's having a good time at home. Same with covid, Nottinghamshire cases are really high and DH workplace shut down because of it. He works nights so hasn't been in contact as there's only 3 people on that shift, but the day shift has come down with it, so he will be back on Monday (he's also test twice and is negative thankfully). fingers cross DS gets to Leeds. Lets hope they get do to the things they want this summer :)

Good to catch up on everyone's news - I have kept quiet as DS1 has been back since mid May and he still didn't know what was happening next year. Finally told 7th July no foreign travel on his course so would all be studying online again next year. He wasn't up for that so was weighing up dropping out or changing course. Week later they announced if you were going to Morocco it was back on (he wasn't), but we managed to persuade him to apply for exceptional circumstances and now it is confirmed he is going to Morocco and needs to be there by 6th September. There is much planning and preparation to do but hopeful things may be looking up for next year...

sammyjoanne · 22/07/2021 00:53

@geogteach yeah everything travel wise has been so up in the air, but glad they got it confirmed now. This summer will be busy getting things ready for him, hope he has a great time in gorgeous Morocco :)

Hi everyone, just checking in and catching up. DS popped home for a few days, and is now at Silverstone for the Formula Student event. Uni teams design build and compete with their own racing car. As a first year he was delighted to be invited, even to be the gofer and tea boy.

Then we have a holiday cottage for a week, and back for DS2's A level results on 10th August. Fingers crossed for a good outcome! DS2 has Reading tickets, DS1 has Leeds tickets, so hopefully they go ahead. Need to bring forward their second jabs if possible.

Does anyone know when Bristol uni freshers typically move in?

ShaunaTheSheep · 22/07/2021 08:09

PS thanks for the Bristol accom advise - DS2 has put down self catering options at Stoke Bishop and Clifton.

sammyjoanne · 23/07/2021 17:27

@ShaunaTheSheep oh wow silverstone sounds really exciting. Hope you have a good time in your holiday cottage. hope DS Alevels go well.
DD2 GCSE results are 12th of August and she wants to do Zoology, so she needs a maths grade 6 and biology grade 6 to do biology alevel. Shes got some unis in mind: Reading,Chester, Aberystwyth and Bangor and Sussex, so if anyone has been to these, please let me know your thoughts on them, as she would love to visit a couple this year and the rest next year :) Lancaster is another option, same as DD1.

Daughters found out today she got an internship for a particle physics research project at Lancaster Its an unpaid one and lasts a couple of weeks in the summer and its remotely, but well pleased as she kept persisting and it paid off. There was some paid ones, but they mainly gave those to 2nd years.

@sammyjoanne.. Well done to your dd...

specialted · 28/07/2021 15:46

Great news for your dd @sammyjoanne ! Wish DS would do something productive ! Too much loafing around . He still hasn't unpacked his suitcase from end of term!! I'm refusing to touch it .

sammyjoanne · 28/07/2021 17:39

Thank you :) She's really bored at home now, so I am glad this gives her something to do. She didnt take computer science at gcse, so this will help on the programming side of things to learn a new skill. And specialted I don't blame you for not touching his case. Im sure he will once he needs something from it :) She still has the late nights, but getting a bit better, about 2am now instead of 4am.. Hasn't helped still with the olympics being on as shes been watching that live.

Dd starting a pub job today.. Only a few shifts a week but given that she can't go away (not double jabbed until 16th August) at least it will earn her a few pennies. I'm sure she could have done a bit of lab work at the local company where she did work experience but she's too shy to ask... Its weird how they change she was a real outgoing chatterbox up until her teens.

We are finally having family gathering tomorrow...belated 18th,21st,60th and a new arrival to celebrate (not seen family for over 18mths).

aibutohavethisusername · 30/07/2021 11:06

DD is still working in a supermarket. This is her third time working there. She is definitely living at home next year and travelling up to London when and if she has lectures!

We are also having a family gathering tomorrow. Is my Dad’s 70th!

sammyjoanne · 30/07/2021 17:32

@Daisysway that sounds really nice, and also emotional for sure after 18 months. And good on your daughter getting a job too, that will help for uni pennies. My sister has got a 11 week old boy and he's adorable, and was so nice to get some cuddles.

@aibutohavethisusername 3 times at the same place, thats great she can do that. They are obviously are very happy with her :) and happy birthday to your dad :) And sounds like the best decision being at home and travel to lectures. I bet she will save a lot of money that way not having to pay for private accommodation too.

Am I the only one with a child who hasn't finished yet?! York DD is still on placement at York hospital and doesn't finish until next Friday when she can finally come home. Meanwhile her twin has been here since December and I'm counting down the days until she goes back to Exeter!

sammyjoanne · 06/08/2021 00:02

@Empra123 that's great she has a placement :) And hope her twin DD is doing ok :)
Cant believe a year has gone by so quickly and now going into second year.

GCSE results today, hope everything went well who has DC this year.
DD2 did very well, and signed up for 6th form. And she's also interested in Lancaster too lol, so got a bit of a plan for next month.

DD1 is planning to get an air bnb on the 18th of September for a few days as for DD1 actual accommodation she cant move in until the 22nd. She plans for those few days to hang out with her physics friends.
Meanwhile on the 18th after dropping DD1 off at the air bnb, then go to the Lancaster open day at the LEC for zoology with DD2, and after that come home.
Shes also interested in Chester (chester zoo huge incentive lol), so if anyone has been to the parkgate road campus there, let me know how it is :)
Hope everyones DC are ok and enjoying the summer x

Congrats to dd2 on GCSEs @sammyjoanne ! Enjoy doing the open days with her. I actually went to Chester uni many many years ago. It's a fab city for students, very compact and walkable from the uni. I bet the campus has changed massively . In fact last weekend I had a reunion with my house mates from Chester uni, we're still all in touch after 30 years!

Daisysway · 16/08/2021 01:35

Well done to your dd2 on GCSEs @sammyjoanne.

Dd still enjoying pub job.. She picked up 150.00 from 4 shifts this week.. So happy bunny she's tending to work lunch shifts or occasional early evening till 9.30pm so no late nights. They can move into their 2nd year house on the 1st September but she's going to Reading, then the following weekend she's in London for someone's birthday weekend
.. So probably won't move into the house until mid September. Shes babysitting for the scientist who arranged her work experience at p&g this week so I'm hoping she can ask about lab work there for next summer.

LIZS · 18/08/2021 17:08

Can anyone with student dc in Scotland advise on the council tax exemption process once they are living out? Dd has a flat rental starting next month but can't work out if each tenant applies separately or as a household.

ClerkMaxwell · 18/08/2021 17:19

DD staying in private accomodation over the summer where it is one joint lease. She registered online with Edinburgh Council and just downloaded the proof that she was a student from MyEd.. It might be different if it is a uni property or everyone has separate leases. Although for the latter I might still claim exemption myself.

LIZS · 18/08/2021 17:38

Thank you, @ClerkMaxwell Dd is inclined to think they each register but her flatmates seem less sure.

@Daisysway thank you Smile . That’s great she’s earning some money in the summer months 🙂 and that will be nice if she can get work experience next summer too. Hope she enjoys Reading. @specialted thank youSmile and that’s brilliant you went to Chester uni🙂 I’ve done some ghost hunts at Stanley palace at Chester a few years back, and it looks like a lovely city. And that’s lovely to hear you are still in touch with your friends as well. Uni is great for making firm friends. Hope to visit Chester in November 🙂

We’re in Cornwall at the moment. Dd1 still doing her work for her supervisor but also enjoying her time with us. Then back home we plan to see some more family and off to chiquitos for dd1’s birthday in a couple of weeks time.

sammyjoanne · 04/09/2021 18:55

DD1 finished her internship and supervisor seems pleased with her work and said he will give her a reference for future employers/internships which is great :)
And we moved her stuff in today. She does not go in until the 22nd, but was allowed to drop her things off. Its a really nice area, all pedestrianised in the Castle area of the city. Was able to park round the corner, so we first did the drop off for things from home. Then went to armadillo storage, picked up her storage items and then dropped off at the flat. Then finally a shop from Sainsburys for some non perishable items and some cleaning products and a meal deal and ate at the flat. Then dropped the key back off to the letting agency and then back home.
Her room is big enough for a blow up double bed on the floor, so that will save on hotel prices when we or her sister come up to visit on the odd occasion Wink
