Not heard from one of his choices

My son sent in his UCAS form well before the deadline, and fairly quickly received conditional offers from four of his choices. However, he hasn't heard a thing from the fifth one. Is this common? And does the delay imply he is more, or less, likely to be offered a place?

Who knows? DS heard from four of his within a couple if weeks, then waited more than a month for the final one - which of course is his top choice. Meanwhile another friend had heard from that uni. Different course tho.

What's the uni op? I believe Durham often offer v late. Ds2's late one was Loughborough.

Is it one he wants to go to?

With ds2 while I got a bit stressed, I rationalised it that his PS, GCSE grades and predicted were good enough for Leeds etc so surely fir L'boro too! Hope you get an offer soon.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 27/02/2021 00:28

Is it Warwick? We’re still waiting on that too (though friend’s DS finally heard from there last week)

SarahLox77 · 27/02/2021 00:29

If it's somewhere he is not bothered about he can withdraw from that choice and then get on with firming his two top choices. Some places open accommodation applications as soon as you firm them, so there would be an advantage in getting on with the process. But others don't, so there is no rush with them to secure the best accommodation.
Sod's law though, the late offering Uni will be the one he really wants?!

Our’s final choice came in 5 weeks later than the others.

Thanks for the very speedy replies! It's Sheffield University, which he was very keen on when he applied. But in the meantime he keeps getting emails and letters from the four who have replied and he's decided one of those seems more appealing.
Thanks for the tip about accommodation, SarahLox77, I may suggest he looks into that for the different places.

DD still waiting to hear from Sheffield.

TeaPiglet · 27/02/2021 00:57

What course is it for?

I applied to Sheffield a couple of years ago and they took forever to make a decision on me - both for the BSc and the Masters I was applying for (I was happy to consider either qualification route - second degree)... I don't think I heard back from the Masters one until nearly July!

They must respond to undergrad applications before May I think. However you haven’t got to March yet!!! Both my DDs waited until March and April for offers! I would not expect Sheffield to be much longer. It’s not remotely late though. I don’t see any issue with waiting a bit longer. All to gain if he’s offered a place. If other universities are contacting him, they are desperate. Are they as good as Sheffield? Does he have a strong application for Sheffield? I would definitely hang on in there. It’s really not late yet.

@TeaPiglet

What course is it for?
It's for Biology.

Thanks, I'm sure you're right. It's just very different from his sister's experience last year. She heard very quickly from all her choices.

There are some universities and some courses where they take longer.

My DD had the ridiculous experience of no answer from two universities at the end of April. Not her no 1 choices so she deleted them. One had interviewed her in February. However most let applicants know by the end of March. So just hang on a bit longer. 4/5 is very good.

TeaPiglet · 27/02/2021 15:30

It can take a while to decide and Sheffield have high competitive places, I'm from the area and the biology course is very good with lots of research going on too which is great to help out with for experience and cv. So take everything into consideration, however accommodation is a bit pricey and worth checking where bio buildings are in relation to nearest accommodation etc as it's a city wide campus

SeasonFinale · 27/02/2021 16:19

At the moment because of switching from exam grades to assessed grades the unis may simply be taking their time considering their offers as it is anticipated they do not wish to over offer as much as they usually do because they anticipate more people meeting their predictions. There are still some unis who have not made any offers yet!
