Dmu discriminating against parents

Please can you help with this petition.
De montfort University are currently monitoring the attendance of parents and caregivers who study with them, whilst offering no support for them to catch up. This is effectively discriminating against those who have caring responsibilities during the pandemic.

For those having to deal with homeschooling and other aspects of the pandemic with a family, this is unacceptable and makes education inaccessible for them.

Hmm For goodness sake this isn't going to get you anywhere. Do you think parliament are going to have a debate specifically about DMU? You're paying fees to receive tuition. Attending on line is in your interest - otherwise you're wasting your money.

I sympathise with the demands on your time, but if you don't think you can meet the requirements to receive tuition take a break of study - don't waste YOUR money.

And if you want to protest about any other university matter be an adult and complain formally through the right channels then the OIA (they will be on their website). Petitions make you sound about 15.

This is not about parliament, it is about people who study and have the issue using one voice for a change. Absolutely, attending is in my best interest, all I am asking is that the university support this by recording lectures and not adding to stress by monitoring attendance. I think you seem to have misunderstood the demand. It is not to not submit work or attend and classes.

But surely the monitoring is a good thing because from such monitoring they will see whether there is a need to provide recordings too.

Exactly. Woods for the Trees come to mind.

If you have serious concerns about this OP you need to raise this with DSU, your course reps etc. There are specific processes in place for situations like this. A change petition (LOL) isn't going to do anything.

They also have a legal obligation to confirm your attendance and make sure your are engaging. Otherwise you will find the SLC will be cancelling your loans.

It would be totally irresponsible for any university NOT to monitor attendance, especially with lectures being held remotely. How are they supposed to know if students are engaging and what they could do better? There’s also an element of pastoral care in monitoring attendance in that enables universities to pinpoint students who might be struggling.

This. That won't get you anywhere.

Look at their No Detriment policy, aimed at ensuring student grades aren't adversely affected by the lockdown and issues arising from it e.g. homeschooling your children, no access to internet at home, having younger siblings homeschooling around you (DMU has a higher than usual number of students who live locally, often in multi-generational households, so younger siblings isn't uncommon). Absence monitoring is required for all students, and may be a requirement of a grant / visa e.g. need to attend x % of lectures.

GCAcademic · 24/02/2021 12:22

Monitoring attendance is mandatory. It's not something that universities can elect not to do.

lanthanum · 24/02/2021 14:24

This is probably best pursued through the Students' Union.

Is it possible that they're trying to monitor to see what support might be needed and offered after 8th March? Where the problem is home-schooling, there's little point in offering catch-up support until the schools do go back, but there might be a lot of point in establishing the need.
