Based on the thread about university degree - I am interested to know the subjects studied at university and what field of work the poster has gone on to.

To get the ball rolling, I did a vocational healthcare degree and am still working in clinical healthcare 20 years later .......

Business, I do admin and accounts

Insert1x20p · 21/02/2021 13:16

History. Qualified as a chartered accountant via a Big 6 ( as it was then) grad scheme. Worked in finance ( mainly forecasting and demand modelling) and then switched to asset management as a sector specialist. Subsequently changed field entirely and for the last decade have worked for a private philanthropic foundation ( similar to Bill and Melinda Gates but far less money! ).

Clever educational and life moves @OublietteBravo and @Xenia regarding balancing education, work and family choices, inspiring!

Great thread OP and useful for future Uni students planning.

Audit and Accounts degree for me initially and then Chartered Accountancy training with Big 4 Accounting firm.

Looking back I would say useful for flexibility in terms of overall life choices and opportunities, following on from that initial base.

As a learning designer, I work with academics at a university to support their courses. Sometimes it's about how to deliver courses online and what technology might suit their needs vest; at other times I work with them to plan their scheme of work and devise classroom activities.

SnowyKittens · 21/02/2021 17:16

I did a BA in Textile Design and I am a freelance print designer and illustrator.

Oh wow that sounds really interesting

BA in Eng Lit - career in media - totally unrelated but no regrets. Thoroughly enjoyed both. Apart from specialist courses that are geared towards production eg offered by NFTS or Ravensbourne, in my experience best to steer clear of Media Studies degrees.
@Volenti I am interested to know how a Law lecturer has been affected by the pandemic given education is still going on?

Are you talking about the lack of F2F and having to adapt your way of working as opposed to difficulty staying employed?
HE sector is really rough right now. I'm working 7 days a week to keep on top of the workload. We are having additional teaching sessions weekly on top of our usual workload to help students.

Before Xmas, this was additional face to face teaching blocks which were supplementary to our usual teaching.

Plus, we are all fearing redundancy. University applications are down, and we have had a lot of students drop out. Not their fault, of course, I don't blame them. But there are loads of unis that are making mass redundancies.

CorianderBee · 21/02/2021 23:22

I know a fair few history grads who became accountants

79andnotout · 21/02/2021 23:36

Biochem undergrad and PhD. Now sales and marketing director at a tech firm in a related field. I've definitely needed my qualifications but my soft skills are crucial too.

I looked into doing scientific sales a few years ago. What qualification did you do to the sales side of things. Like you have a science background not sales background
Revengeofthepangolins · 21/02/2021 23:46

science degree, then into the City

BiddyPop · 22/02/2021 04:08

Undergrad was BSc (biochemistry). Masters in economic policy analysis.

Working as a civil servant with a lot of policy analysis and legislative drafting. And while never directly in the Science and Innovation area, close enough to that at times, and a knowledge of science has been useful on a number of occasions.

polkadotpixie · 22/02/2021 04:28

@WannabeOT I'm exactly the same. I have a History degree and now work as a band 2 NHS admin assistant

I'm planning on going back to Uni in a couple of years to do a vocational degree

MyOtherProfile · 22/02/2021 04:35

Languages degree and now a special needs teacher. Useful degree in the sense that I still work a lot around helping people learn language.

sarahphimanellahim · 22/02/2021 04:42

Undergrad: Theology
Career: Teaching

I always wanted to be a teacher, so degree subject wasn't so important to me. Was originally going to be a primary teacher, but ended up teaching secondary.

lovelilies · 22/02/2021 05:07

chopc · 22/02/2021 06:49

OP posts:
