St John's has a reputation for being a religious college but DS (2nd year Durham student) says it's a pretty cool college and encouraged his younger sister to put it in her top six. Overlooking the cathedral on the Bailey - quite an envious position to be in, particularly if choir is his thing.

Bend/MidLife - hold on, still keeping my fingers crossed for you both for Durham offers.

Vargas · 12/03/2021 08:48

DS has been allocated Hatfield College, it was in his top 5. He really wanted Collingwood, his top choice, and from googling Hatfield seems to have a reputation of being very posh. Anyone know about this? DS made his college list based on catering and location, not poshness! He does go to an independent school but we are not at all 'rah'. I'm foreign so can't possibly be posh Wink.

chopc · 12/03/2021 09:40

@Vargas I sent you the link to the geography group chat? Plus if he joins a chat for the people at Hatfield, he can get a feel for the people going there. Hatfield was one of DS's top choices as well. It's the people that makes the place right?

As with anything I think there is a variety of people anywhere. The Durfess page on Facebook is also funny for any prospective Durham people

WelcomeMarch · 12/03/2021 10:19

Vargas, the new-ish system of college allocation should stop any one college from having an intake massively biased in one direction.

WelcomeMarch · 12/03/2021 10:20

(It used to be that you applied to one college and were maybe pooled, not that you selected several choices.)

jano69 · 12/03/2021 11:05

Hatfield is considered the "posh" college but this is largely Durham banter and the new college allocation system will make this year's intake much broader. At the end of the day, it's a beautiful college on the Bailey with great facilities. You can find lots on You Tube.

Vargas · 12/03/2021 11:37

Thanks so much all re: Durham colleges, and yes @chopc you did send me the link, which I haven't done anything with yet...

I am hopeful that the new college allocation system means that ds will meet lots of people from lots of different backgrounds, as we definitely live in a bit of a London bubble, and not just because of Covid.

I think Uni choices need to be made by 10th June, so there should be time to go and look at some of them when the domestic travel ban is lifted. Anyone else planning to do the same? We had a look at Exeter and Bristol in October. DS said he didn't need to look at Cambridge as he 'would go there anyway if he got in', but we also didn't look at Durham so I would like to do that. I know we probably won't be allowed inside anywhere but might be nice to take a look at it.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 12/03/2021 13:48

I think one of the reasons that Hatfield is considered posh is simply because state school kids avoid it like the plague because it has so many double rooms.

People who've been to boarding school typically have no issues sharing a room with a complete stranger!

chopc · 12/03/2021 13:58

Never thought of this @MidLifeCrisis007 !

Beetlesand · 12/03/2021 14:05

Dd went to a very poorly performing state school and has been allocated a Bailey college.im really glad that the new allocation system might mix things up a bit ( although I’m not 100% sure I believed all the talk about poshness and the myths about college ‘types’ anyway!) Dd is happy to share and looking forward to making new friends.
If some of your lovely dc are kicking about the Bailey next September I’d feel even happier that she’s there Smile

Revengeofthepangolins · 12/03/2021 14:28

Don’t see why the new system would mix it up all that much more than the system extant until last year. As it was, around half the people who applied to castle and Hatfield (for example) didn’t get places there so all those Hatfield-lovers would be randomly put elsewhere and applicants who really don’t want to go to Hatfield are now less likely to end up there as they have ability to name lots of other choices rather than being randomly allocated to any college, which might be Hatfield. In fact, that on that basis the Bailey vs Hill supposed split might become more polarised as people list lots of neighbouring colleges on their preferences, rather than being randomly allocated after they miss their first choice.

The new system is a much needed step towards reducing the number of students getting the catering style they don’t want, which is great.

Totally agree that avoiding shared rooms probably shapes some of Hatfield’s applicant group, as it so very share-y there (although my boarding school DS really didn’t want to share so would have been aiming to pollute the demographic of another college).

The major divide happened back when one applied to a college, not the university, but that is a long long time ago now.

Jalfrezi · 12/03/2021 16:24

For those that are also still waiting on Durham history - DD just received an offer today. Fingers crossed for you too.

bendmeoverbackwards · 12/03/2021 16:44

Wow well done to your dd @Jalfrezi that’s for AMH right?

Jalfrezi · 12/03/2021 18:20

@bendmeoverbackwards - Yes for AMH and the standard offer so 1 grade higher than Oxford. Hope it means they are starting to come out for all who have been waiting ages and wishing your DD the best of luck🤞. Offer came through mid afternoon and she was allocated her second choice college.

bendmeoverbackwards · 12/03/2021 18:25

Thank you @Jalfrezi I assume your dd is firming up Oxford? Where is her insurance?

bendmeoverbackwards · 12/03/2021 19:06

I’ve been dipping into TSR. Lots of offers for Liberal Arts at Durham coming through today. Thought today might be the day we hear but nothing. I bet dd will be in the last batch of emails, seems a long wait till the end of March.

Applepieco · 12/03/2021 19:36

@bendmeoverbackwards

It really does. No rhyme or reason! A few Liberal arts, one History & one Lit came through at DS’s school this afternoon from Durham. Last few waiting for History combo, Law & English.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 12/03/2021 20:37

Still waiting here @bendmeoverbackwards!

Meanwhile I received this desperately sad email from the Durham Alumni office a few moments ago...

"Sarah Everard

We are grateful for the inpouring of tributes and condolences from alumni following the tragic death of Sarah Everard, a beloved graduate of Durham University who read Geography at St Cuthbert’s Society.

This is a shocking and profound loss which is felt right across our alumni community and by all here at Durham. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah’s family and friends at this difficult time."

Vargas · 12/03/2021 22:35

Oh that's heartbreaking @MidLifeCrisis007! Sad

quest1on · 13/03/2021 09:37

So very tragic MidLifeCrisis007.

chopc · 13/03/2021 10:20

So sad about Sarah Everard :(

DS is back to being exhausted all the time but is so full of good spirits.

Last night he had a zoom call with prospective Collingwood students - wonder if any of your DC were on the call?

Longtimenewsee · 13/03/2021 10:58

New username name for me

Lovely words from Durham about their Beloved graduate

Dc is also exhausted but so much better emotionally and mentally since back at school.

Afaik dc has not found or connected with any fellow college offer holders. I think that’s a really good idea . There is a Durham 2021 offer holders FB group but it has a has a huge number of members.

Bend and midlife ..hope you hear soon

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/03/2021 10:47

Did anyone’s dc virtually attend Exeter’s campus tour yesterday? Dd did and really liked it. Very positive news for her.

I can’t remember whose dc on here have firmed up Exeter, I think it’s a few?

Revengeofthepangolins · 14/03/2021 10:53

Considering Exeter in our household but I think missed that. Bother.
