Sorry, I know I'm not a Durham parent in any shape or form, but can I just point out thatbthe second link above is to the postgraduate page?

Undergrad is hereSmile:

MarchingFrogs · 20/02/2021 13:03

...that...the...

And not a redirected Oxbridge parent for that matter, just a bod with curiosity about many things in this worldGrin.

EwwSprouts · 21/02/2021 10:22

Just to reiterate this years applicants are unlucky, and the effect is going to roll on. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-56112743

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/02/2021 11:07

Awful news for trainee dentists @EwwSprouts Where will this end? It could go on for years, never catching up Sad

chopc · 21/02/2021 23:09

Hope everyone had a good half term?

I wonder if tomorrow's news about the path out of lockdown will lift my mood or sink it further?

DS has been trying to work hard as he has low stakes mocks in the first week of March. However it has been difficult to get motivated

chopc · 21/02/2021 23:15

quest10n- I wonder if people post the truth in TSR. One person got rejected by I think LSE due to having a bad reference. Really? Can't comment on the people with top grades being rejected due to their uncompetitive PS but it seems somewhat shocking

I also floated the idea of DS having a year out but I think in the absence of other solid plans, he just wants to get on with the next stage

I started a threat on which degree/which career which I found rather interesting and feel rather relieved after reading the thread on STEM and vocational degrees being the way forward

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 22/02/2021 09:23

I have only dipped my toe in TSR but one thread starter said he had really strict parents and that he had disappointed them by failing to get into Oxford and he was just waiting on Cambridge, same year application. Someone said if you are going to troll at least know you can't apply for both. Grin I see it as another Instagram some are keeping it relatively real, others faking it on a large scale.

I am really hoping that the reports about travelling out of your area on 29th March are true. BBC are saying "people will once again be able to travel out of their areas - although guidance will likely still recommend staying local" what do they class as local if you are travelling out of your area? FFS. How many minutes drive away from where you are? Hopefully this will be clarified later.

The dentist students for Scottish dental schools must be disappointed; forced to delay, not even a choice to defer. Sad

Ds is completely excited about Durham, even picked out the Durham hoodie he likes. I am pleased he is focused forward.

An interesting article :

And another wonkhe.com/blogs/ucas-january-deadline-2021-in-depth/

bendmeoverbackwards · 22/02/2021 11:47

@chopc my dd is also really struggling with motivation. She wanted to do some revision over half term but she hasn't done much at all, she's feeling a bit low.

I'm hoping the return to 'school' today will help motivate her.

SATSmadness · 22/02/2021 11:56

@SeasonFinale

The second link led to an interesting graph which when could be flexed for data relating to 19 year olds (so last years Y13s reapplying presumably predominantly with grades in hand) to reveal that there was a 28% increase in such applicants applying in the medicine category this year (although I think the category may have been medicine and something else so can't say for certain and without absolute numbers it's not so informative overall).

SeasonFinale · 22/02/2021 12:05

@SATSmadness - yes it may be best if I go and pop it in the medicine thread

SeasonFinale · 22/02/2021 12:14

Also SATS - if you look at 35 and over age group, medicine applications were up 40% (but I presume smaller numbers).

The thing I found interesting is that in period of economic instability more people turn to education and I guess with furlough to redundancies to fewer jobs etc that also explains the increase in applications overall.

chopc · 22/02/2021 12:15

@OnTheBenchOfDoom that's so lovely to hear. Hope my DS is in the same position of being excited soon

@bendmeoverbackwards let's hope so

chopc · 22/02/2021 12:50

My DS only learnt last week that he was allowed to meet with a friend outside for the purpose of exercise 🙈. I go out to work and being down I. The dumps haven't really felt like meeting anyone ...... but I didn't realise he thought that was because I wasn't allowed to

SATSmadness · 22/02/2021 12:52

@SeasonFinale

One can but wonder whether it's a case of staying inside the ivory tower of education for longer due to the scary world of precarious employment in pandemic times (despite all the jobs retention schemes funded by the government) or possibly the thought that being educated to degree level might offer a greater level of job security better able to withstand future pandemic situations.

It would seem reasonable to be expecting increases in applications for Masters/PhDs by 2020/2021 graduates too, given the cutbacks in graduate recruitment numbers.

SeasonFinale · 22/02/2021 13:01

Yes, I suspect that will be the case too. I have one who graduated last year, is waiting for applications to open for a career path where he needs to undergo assessments which are all on hold because of the lockdown and is now considering whether he should just do a Masters in the meantime.

quest1on · 22/02/2021 13:27

Hi everyone. I thought this GW statement about 2021 exams was due today, but apparently it’s “week beginning 22nd Feb.”

So annoying, as I’m sure unis are at least partially stalling with offers pending greater clarity. Do you think it’s is the case, Season?

Has anyone heard of any LSE offers yet? Nobody at DS’ school apparently.

Vargas · 22/02/2021 13:32

Still waiting on Durham....

PresentingPercy · 22/02/2021 13:42

The big problem is: if everyone tried to do a masters, where does that leave employment next year? Are masters courses expanding? It does not feel like the economy will bounce back that quickly. It is putting off employment for another year but often no clear path opens up. A friend of ours has a DC doing a politics masters but he has not applied for a single job yet. It is just treading water really. I cannot see how the masters will make him more employable. He has virtually no work experience (and what he did do was all given by family members). He has not sought a single thing himself.

I do feel the motivated will succeed. The laid back might get lucky but they might just have a bigger loan.

bendmeoverbackwards · 22/02/2021 16:09

Same here @Vargas Hmm

chopc · 22/02/2021 16:29

Is anyone concerned about the TAG?

My experience is that of set by the school there is no standardisation.

My DS did considerably well in the may/June GCSE's than he did in the mocks which were only in March.

The way grades have traditionally been awarded- how well you do depends on how well other people do ........ I was really hoping for externally set papers- they can perhaps be picked according to the topics covered.

It doesn't make me feel any better but I can kind of understand if universities are making fewer offers at the moment ........

SeasonFinale · 22/02/2021 17:32

Yes hoping for news by end of February so I guess that will be 5.30pm on Friday (or indeed 22.30 as one lot was!!)

Haven't seen any LSE at all yet.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 22/02/2021 18:01

@chopc I don't know how other colleges assess I can only go off Ds's. They end of topic test about every 3 weeks so before the first lockdown they had several sets of these grades for each subject.

Ds also sat an AS maths past paper in December of year 12 as they do the whole of A level maths in just 1 year. This is because their timetable says "maths" and then "further maths" but in both lessons they are taught A level maths. In year 13 it is again timetabled the same way but it is all of further maths in 1 year.

So again he has his grade from that. With that result came your grade, the grade boundaries and how many students had achieved each grade. It also listed how many students were above target, on target or below target as someone getting a C may be their target grade. It did give Ds a very good idea for the class as a whole and where he ranked.

They have had more mocks in December and one set of end of topic tests. All this is to be summed up on the usual annual report which is due out to us shortly.

I think if someone is coming out with grades all over the place it makes it difficult to assess a student. If they consistently come out with Bs then it is easier but I still think it is difficult to assess them when they are not even in the physical classroom and can't put their hand up so to speak. Lots of them don't have a camera or have it turned on if they do.

I do agree about the whole can perform better in the actual exams and maybe if they are in a sixth form attached to the school they will have that information on there. I think Ds was lucky that all his offers came out before the exams were cancelled. I do believe unis are waiting to see what GW says later this week.

chopc · 22/02/2021 18:05

Thanks for the info @OnTheBenchOfDoom

Experienced teachers I suppose should be able to guage a student but where a teacher has a pre conceived idea about a student, it is difficult to be objective - especially when it comes to essay based and performance based subjects.

Let's see what the announcement is .......
