Nursing Degree - Considering Uni courses

FAQs · 09/02/2021 18:23

Evening, my daughter is starting the long process of shortlisting Universities to study nursing, in particular Children and Young Persons Nursing, we are finding the virtual open days not particularly helpful, some better than others and really feel for them trying to attract students in difficult times.

So I’m after feedback from Nursing students, parents of students, she would prefer a city, I’m looking at the safety aspect with ward shifts and getting back to accommodation but otherwise we fatigue from looking, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

My DD is currently at Notts Uni studying nursing. She is loving the course. Ask away!

I do think choosing based on perceived safety is a bit odd. There is no great risk of being attacked any more than the general population. Obviously London has round the clock transport and nurses can travel together safely in other cities. Nearly every nurse gets employed so I would just look at the cities she likes the most.

A friend of ours has a nurse DD who trained at Bournemouth. I don’t know if they do child nursing. I know Birmingham has a children’s hospital and what university has students at Gt Ormond Street and other well known hospitals for DC? I would assume safety is fine for everyone and base my choice on training quality.

London has GOSH training

@PresentingPercy I’m from a pretty rough part of South London and moved away a few years ago so safety is a concern for me, especially as I also spent several years doing shift work for the emergency services, cabbies wouldn’t enter where I lived, so it’s natural for me, including from my own and dealing with others to consider safety.

We haven’t considered Bournemouth so will look into that thank you, Birmingham and Notts are shortlisted.

@Applepieco is the accommodation close to the hospital it didn’t seem very clear from the websites, I’m keen for her to see Notts, I’ve heard it has a very good reputation.

@DogsSausages is that Kingston?

Ok. But you are not going back there so I’m not sure it’s entirely relevant regarding where DD trains as a nurse. I would just choose the best you can for DD. She’s probably more likely to be attacked by a drunk patient. She will make friends and will look out for herself.

My daughter did her nursing degree at Nottingham University. She also really liked the Manchester University nursing course as her second choice.
She has said that universities that have medicine departments have access to the best libraries, facilities etc. for nursing students. Worth considering.
Queens Medical Centre ( the main hospital) is opposite Nottingham University campus so close to halls for first years. There is lots of nearby student housing too. The campus is laid out like a massive park.

I am a nurse at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and I work with students from University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University (I went to university of Birmingham, but it was a long time ago so my experience won’t be particularly relevant). Both university campuses are in the south of the city and the children’s hospital is in the city centre so easy to get to from accommodation (the universities are on major bus/ train routes into the city centre or some students drive). Most placements are at the children’s hospital, but there are other hospitals too and community placements in different areas.

Thank you @frippit and @badlydrawnbear much appreciated, she has read this and we plan to now visit both when we are allowed.

She has also requested info from Manchester.

If she chooses the Cambridge campus of Annika Ruskin many placements are at Addenbrookes. I have worked with a couple of children's nurses who trained here and had a great experience.

Anglia - not Annika
