waiting to hear from warwick

Just wondering if this is common.
ds put in his ucas form in october and within a few weeks had offers from all his choices bar warwick.
Now in February and still nothing!
Driving us crackers and as it is the THE course he thinks he will put as first choice, it is increasing the stress.

Anyone else heard?

Depends what course it is. From memory I think dds application was submitted in November and she heard back at beginning of February.

Some courses are over subscribed at Warwick and I'm guessing they will also be trying to gauge how to make the right amount of offers given that exams are not being sat.

lockedownloretta · 02/02/2021 11:14

similar timescale then...
hmmm

will keep hanging on!

DS didn't hear from Warwick until very very late last year - way after all his others were in and months after all his friends applying for STEM subject degrees had heard. I think it was right at the end of March in the end. It turned out well though as they gave him such a great offer he was able to put his high offer but favourite uni first knowing Warwick would be a fantastic backstop, so it's worth your dc holding their nerve if they really like Warwick.

lockedownloretta · 02/02/2021 15:56

Thank you. Do you mind me asking what course it. Ds is hoping to do a languages course.

DS1 - Bochemistry (2015) - offer within a month
DS2 - History of Art - applied 2 months ago, had an offer at least a couple of weeks ago, probably made a while earlier (has to be nagged to check email)
DD - PAIS and French (2019) - applied ?early Dec, eventually got an offer quite near to the deadline for universities to respond to on-time applications (which was 6th April). Not sure which half of her application it took them ages to decide upon. Or possibly both, possibly it was a slack year for applications at Exeter, Leeds, Birmingham and UEA., which all offered quite quickly.

@lockedownloretta

Thank you. Do you mind me asking what course it. Ds is hoping to do a languages course.
It was indeed Modern Languages.
mimbleandlittlemy · 02/02/2021 17:18

And ds back from work and says it was actually the week before the deadline date for unis to send out offers so later than I thought.

Sparkletastic · 02/02/2021 17:26

DD got offered a place at Warwick early this month (and has now accepted it such is her determination to go there!). She was interviewed in December. English and Film degree.

PresentingPercy · 02/02/2021 17:34

Getting offers is not a race. What does it really matter. It’s 2 Feb!!! Lots of offers don’t come in until March. Even for MFL! There is no advantage to early offers. No one is missing out on accommodation. I expect they are weighing up deadline applications as well as early ones. Probably fair.

mimbleandlittlemy · 02/02/2021 18:01

I think everyone knows that Percy but in these very uncertain times I think a lot of kids would like the certainty of an offer so it's fair enough for the OP to ask and for a few people to give reassurance.

Chasingsquirrels · 02/02/2021 18:05

The UCAS deadline was extended as well so has only just closed.
DS is in the same position with LSE, he had an email from them a few weeks ago and said his heart was in his mouth but it was just a "we've got your application but haven't looked at it yet as the deadline has been extended".

PresentingPercy · 02/02/2021 21:40

I would have thought most people could rationalise why universities might not have responded yet. At least not getting all offers immediately IS normal!

lockedownloretta · 02/02/2021 22:58

perfectly aware it is not a race thank you.

@mimbleandlittlemy thank you so much-really reassuring

DS waited last year until the end of March to hear about Economics.

triggers34 · 02/02/2021 23:48

Dd does have an offer for french and English lit , I think she heard in November , she's still waiting for Edinburgh though.

lockedownloretta · 03/02/2021 17:46

offer has just come through! Smile

Frazzled6 · 03/02/2021 18:03

Great news.. Inline with my Dds last year.

I can't speak highly enough of Warwick.. Its not a city uni but the students seem to work hard and play hard.

Its been a difficult year but I feel the uni have worked hard to offer a good standard of higher education.

triggers34 · 03/02/2021 19:06

Great news , dds Edinburgh offer has just come through too .

mimbleandlittlemy · 03/02/2021 19:58

Great news. It such a relief, isn’t it?

lockedownloretta · 03/02/2021 20:09

@triggers34 fantasstic! Is she really pleased?

Yes, a huge relief!

OP posts:
lockedownloretta · 03/02/2021 20:10

@Frazzled6 that is really good to know

OP posts:
triggers34 · 04/02/2021 00:05

@lockedownloretta yes she is pleased but finding it hard to choose. Edinburgh want ABB and Warwick AAB , we live as far south as you can get and of course she hasn't visited either. She's slightly leaning to Edinburgh . What about your dc , will they firm Warwick? I've heard only good things about it.

lockedownloretta · 04/02/2021 09:49

The choosing is very, very hard .
Ds was certain he wanted Warwick. The course is only offered at 5 universities in the UK, and he had rejected all the others for various reasons. It was 100% number one choice.

But he has got an offer from Newcastle for a different course which is also very appealing and he loves the city of Newcastle. The stats for Newcastle are excellent too. Lot of thinking needed.

Edinburgh is a fantastic university! But very far away for you!

mimbleandlittlemy · 04/02/2021 10:38

OP - sounds like your ds might be doing as niche a language combo as mine is if you've got Newcastle and Warwick in there and a small choice. DS was limited to Birmingham, Warwick, Newcastle, Cardiff and Manchester, though he did toy with a slightly different choice of languages at Bristol but jettisoned it as a plan in the end. Warwick's course definition for his combo was 'with' rather than 'and' for the ab initio language, which tipped him towards Birmingham as first choice and Warwick second as it's equal weight at Birmingham and he didn't think he would get to as high a standard with the ab initio after talking to people on his virtual offer holder day last year.

He is currently on a gap year (planned to travel to his two language countries of course, but actually ended up with a job so that worked well - about the only thing that did last year!) and he has picked up lots of good tips about accommodation, courses, modules etc from the Student Room so well worth your ds having a look on there and asking any questions he might have, if he needs an additional steer.

caringcarer · 04/02/2021 23:40

Things don't change. I went to Warwick almost 30 years ago and I can clearly remember getting all of my other offers and waiting ages for Warwick. I did enjoy my time there though.
