To change from an Artificial Intelligence degree to computer science

DS is currently in the first year of a university degree in Artificial intelligence. He seems to think it would be better to swap to a general Computer Science degree as it would mean he could apply for a wider range of jobs in future. I think that he would be better sticking to AI as it is more specialised and his skills would be in high demand. I feel that a more specialised skill set would be more marketable to potential employers.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this field?

Thanks in advance.

I've been in tech for 10 years as a software engineer. If he's sure he wants to specialise in that then he should stay on the course, but personally I'd say it's better to move to general compsci as he'll learn a wider range of knowledge and experience different courses he may not know he is interested in until he learns more about them. there are modules he can choose that may be related to AI, his project could be focused on ai but then if he changes his mind he will have a wider range of options and experience.
I think it's a great area to work in and you can change your specialisation by working on different projects to gain experience in a new area.

I junk either will be fine. Wider range with computing but lots of cross over with both tbh. AI grads will probably earn more as a shortage atm and hard to recruit. However the amount of places wanting them are fewer but they are the big exciting companies generally.

So long as he has a few common computer languages at the end he should be good for any computer grad jobs. (I've worked in and currently big tech and have personally employeed computer graduates)

'junk should be think. My apologies! Just to add

Either way he'll be grand and should get a job either way.

How much difference would it make?
When I did my degree AI students and comp eng had a few modules that were compulsory which were options for general CS students. Then your degree type gave you higher priority for some final year projects.

If there are modules they can't fit in that he wants to do then sure switch.
It makes zero difference after graduating for jobs or masters.

Most AI degrees follow a general course for the first one or even two years and only specialise after that so in reality there will be very little difference between that and a general degree with AI modules. The difference is probably just in the name. If he thinks he may want to move away from AI modules or apply for jobs in a different CS field then switch but it don’t think it will make much difference

Thank you all for your advice. I will relay it to DS!
