Advice on Manchester Uni accommodation choices please?

Hi all, DS has had an offer from Manchester. He's not sure whether it will be his firm choice but they have encouraged him to express a preference for accommodation in any case.

I have had a quick look but no idea really what's good/central - anyone have any advice/experience? He's applied for physics, if that makes any difference for locations of lectures or whatever!

Thanks

@Pumpkintopf

St Anselms hall looks good- anyone any experience of it?
Yep, stayed there last year (not a mum obv, but I feel your chances of getting a reply are quite low otherwise). Best year of my life, would recommend it to anyone, the rooms were great, people were fantastic, by the end of the year we all got to know eachother quite well. Dinners are formal, you're asked to wear a gown and stay for the full hour, not as bad as it sounds, good chance to talk to people. The hall also has a lot of traditions, like the annual debate (supposed to be 2 every academic year) and the annual London dinner. The hall also has more facilities than most others, with a gym, a library, squash court, bar, theatre room and multiple common rooms.

The hall closed this year due to the pandemic, but is due to reopen next academic year. A real shame, it was the only university owned residence to close, but should have a fresh intake of first years next year.

@Room36 no problem at all with you not being a mum! It's great to hear some first hand experience- thank you very much, much appreciated.

It's by far my favourite option of the Manchester accommodation although ds seems keen on Fallowfield but that seems quite a long way out from the campus where lectures will be and also not much choice for catered halls (his choice).

You get to make 5 choices of accommodation, but you can’t rank them, annoyingly. The uni tries to give you one of your choices. DS is in a Fallowfield hall and is really happy there despite the situation. It’s about 2 miles from the uni, but buses are very regular, every 5 minutes or so.

I was in Hulme Hall but we're talking a long time ago. It was brilliant. You can walk to campus from there but it is also very easy from Fallowfield. Its a great place to study

Fallowfield is a student area, lots of buses to the campus, which is very spread out anyway. Also within walking distance.

Thanks so much - it doesn't help not being able to visit and I don't know Manchester that well, so helpful to hear from those who know!

Fallowfield is definitely 'the' place to be for students. Weirdly I never knew a single person at At Anselm, which suggests they rather kept themselves to themselves?

jay55 · 22/01/2021 23:14

In normal times how many hours of lectures/labs will he have?
If it's a high contact subject, being closer to lectures is a blessing. And you can still go out in fallowfield.

I'd go for Unsworth (only 2 years old) or Richmond Park - definitely Owen's Park in Fallowfield. My daughter had a great time although cut short by Bloody Covid. Fallowfield is pretty scary though - need to be street wise and security conscious when renting after first year. Break ins are rife.
