University sports scholarships

DS is on a national talent programme for his sport, so we're looking at university sports scholarships. They seem to include a small to medium cash payment and a package of support, including free gym access etc. They don't say the cash payment is annual so I guess it's a one-off payment. But does the package usually last the full length of your course, or do you reapply each year? None of the ones we've looked at have been clear on this.

I have a friend with 2 DC in this position. In their case, the DC are on fully-funded scholarships in the USA in different states.

Her DD is the same age as my DD1 - they were in infant school together - she applied after her level 3 BTec so is now in her 3rd year. Mum told me that all fees, food, coaching & accommodation is paid for. All it costs them is flights.

As far as continuing goes, they have to represent their university in their chosen sport unless injured or in an international squad, and they have to make reasonable progress in their studies. My friend's DD was injured for most of last academic year, so her progress on her studies was really good. Her DS is now in his 2nd year. His sport progress was brilliant but he enjoyed other distractions rather too much so mum had a Skype call from his tutor to put a rocket up him.

They looked into UK universities for the DS, particularly Bath and Loughborough but the support on offer was nothing like that in the USA.

Thanks. I was asking about UK scholarships, e.g. at Nottingham, Warwick.

The US is an option, but currently he hasn't even decided whether he wants to stay home or go away for uni. He's hellishly busy with school an training so I'm doing most of the research on his behalf - I looked briefly at the US and watched a Fulbright webinar but it all seemed a bit complicated and I concluded our income is too high for a scholarship, unless it wasn't means tested at all. Every uni is different so it would take a lot of work to investigate. He's very academic so needs a uni with a good academic reputation as well as for his sport.

The University of Birmingham scholarship definitely includes termly payments.

Obviously only useful if Birmingham offers the course he wants, as well.

I think they are often reassessed annually, although it will vary. The scholarship is often enough to pay for sport related costs including coaching and Travel to competitions, rather than being for really significant amounts. But again that will vary.

Try Durham. Generous scholarship, renewed annually as long as you pull your weight.
