I dont think anything will be ready for those that are already there.

Wbeezer · 01/05/2023 17:25

Yes, unlikely unfortunately.

They are going to be turning the old Madras High school buildings out near Morrisons into a new accomodation block. It was in the Dundee Courier. Let's hope it doesn't take too long and is a budget friendly option.

That will be heavily contested by the locals. It is slap bang in the middle of a residential area. Students will also really hate living there it's so very much away from everything else. I understood that area was to be affordable housing. I haven't seen any information about it anywhere recently.

Stockpot · 01/05/2023 18:58

Perhaps it would have been a better result for all, if the town council had been more constructive regarding the Albany Park redevelopment.

It's cost issues stalling that project now not objections.

Stockpot · 01/05/2023 19:22

Interesting. They have money for Madras but not Albany Park. I’m too far away and too new to know the ins and outs.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/05/2023 19:27

But the Madras site was part of the deal for the council buying and using uni land for the new school. Completely different scenario. I haven't read this whole thread but I think there is more accommodation to be built at the North Haugh.

Wbeezer · 02/05/2023 16:13

I knew the Madras site in the centre of town was part of the deal with the council and plans for that to be a business School have been known for quite a while, it was the other site at the edge of town and plans for that to be turned into accomodation that was new information to me, but I don't read the Courier every week so might have missed an earlier announcement.
The Albany Park development is a joint venture I think? I don't think it's under the sole control of the uni, I seem to remember someone saying that there was an issue because of that but again I'm not up to date on that.

Wbeezer · 02/05/2023 16:20

@ ApolloandDaphne, I imagine there's room for both and the High School building is listed so couldn't easily just be knocked down and surely students aren't any worse than Junior High School kids?
My son has happily lived at that end of town for three years, maybe the rich kids wouldn't choose it but plenty of others are happy to compromise.

EachandEveryone · 03/05/2023 18:27

I just feel so sorry for everyone that hasnt got rich parents. My DN is in bits none of them can find anything. Its bloody awful really. They cant get jobs as no one will employ them knowing they will leave during the holidays.

Newgirls · 03/05/2023 19:08

Ok I think we have a flat but it is £1k a month!!

my dd works during the holidays at home. Not enough to cover that rent that’s for sure!

EachandEveryone · 03/05/2023 19:15

£1000 each?? I pay £1300 for a three bedroomed flat in London 😮 thats horrific. I hope my niece gets accepted back into halls.

Stockpot · 03/05/2023 20:20

£1300 for a three bedroom is very good! A friend’s child at Imperial is really struggling.

My DD did find work with no previous experience. She basically applied a load of places (I prepared get for a hard slog and a lot of rejection) and accepted a zero hours contract. Its not perfect, but it’s something.

Newgirls · 03/05/2023 20:22

Yep each!!

we got halls for a few years which helped but final year is going to be £££

I hope it is a fabulous location @Newgirls at that price, splashing out in final year feels better than really high rent for year 2/3. I was horrified last year when DS was applying for places which were £840, but that now sounds good value. He ended up paying £525/month for 9 months, so was very lucky, but I think it would have been worth a couple of thousand more to be at the heart of St Andrews, he spent a lot of time walking in and out as he was 2 miles from lectures and town.

For those still looking, next to a good bus route in Dundee is really not bad, particularly with the free buses.

Newgirls · 04/05/2023 17:58

Hi monkey 👋

it’s very central and by her dept. Smart and modern. So for safety etc it’s a nice option. We should be able to let it go in May. So 8 months. Starts oct. Just paid deposit so phew that one ticked off. Just got to find something for sept now 🤦‍♀️

For those still looking rollos said they expected another 30+ apartments to become avail within a month or so

Monkey2001 · 04/05/2023 21:30

@Newgirls I am sure she can make something work for a month, even if she is sofa surfing, and Dundee for a month would be fine - is there a BF with a room?! When I started uni many years ago, Bristol put 8 girls on camp beds in the library whilst they waited for a few students to drop out!

Newgirls · 04/05/2023 22:32

Yes surely she can find a floor and pay something towards that or Dundee would be good - they go out there a lot anyway. Feels fixable 🙏

DD just got final confirmation from her landlord that she can pick up he

Stockpot · 08/06/2023 21:56

Sorry thumbs!

….that she can pick up her keys from July 1st and rent is due! Phew! It’s a relief to know that the previous tenant gave notice and will move out as expected.

Some of her friends who were struggling to find accommodation have finally found rooms, and in good locations too.

I hope all of your DC are safely sorted now.

Newgirls · 09/06/2023 08:15

Sorted here. Glad yours is ok too.

Monkey2001 · 09/06/2023 08:45

Great to hear that you are all sorted. I noticed the recent flurry of activity on the FB page and hoped there might be good news.

Graduation next week for us! DS got a First, so very happy. Looking forwards to our final visit, staying on a boat in the harbour which we booked on AirBnB, with extra night in ABH for graduation ball.

Newgirls · 09/06/2023 11:21

Wow congratulations to your clever chap 👏

the graduation sounds good - boat in harbour sounds amazing - and you can stay in uni accom? I need to take notes x

Newgirls · 09/06/2023 11:22
